That's a lot of low scores. Edge being far too critical for their own good.

Last Remnant isn't that bad. Probably a moderate 7.

I wouldn't expect any of those games to score highly. Just a bad month.

Sonic and the Black Knight?

Lot of average and mediocre games getting average and mediocre scores. Since when was 6s and 7s a low score?

5 might technically be an average classed game but it's been common place for reviewers to always be very generous in most cases. Constantly giving games 8, 9 and 10 like many do has no doubt worked up the feeling amongst general gamers that anything which scores lower is dross and not worth bothering with. It just seems that Edge has been increasingly harsh with their scores recently and as a result lots of people will see them and just miss out potentially pretty fun average games.

Didn't they give Mirrors Edge a 4?

I prefer to look at it as "Locoroco 2 got the highest rating in this months Edge" ^_^

What did they say about Castlevania by the by? Was it a case of "more of the same, knock a few points off it"? Same with Patapon?

Grindy and repetitious. The game doesn't get going until 8 hours in when it resorts to becoming SotN again.

Patapon 2 is very much the same game as the first. Unambitious. It follows the same concept that was realised in the first game only now the freshness and innovation have gone the faults are all the more obvious and grating.

The problem with Edge's reviews and ensuing scores is the tendency towards bumming a particular type of game and shunning another. And I don't even mean in terms of genre, though they do showcase an annoying habbit of getting all misty-eyed and nostalgic about anything with gameplay mechanics from the early Nintendo days. Detract a point from any half-decent platformer, or add a point to anything else, tends to be my motto for making sense of their scores.

But no, I mean this tendency towards lumping heaps of praise at polished titles, and detracting a bloody million marks for each bug present in a game. It's weird because it doesn't even seem to correlate with the text. See their Fallout 3 review. Only two real negative comments of any significance: the game's length, and its bugs. The rest was really rather praiseworthy, rendering the 7/10 at the bottom a little confusing.

See also Morrowind, Bloodlines, and a whole host of clearly brilliant games with admittedly a fair few problems, ending up around the 5 or 6 mark.

How the Xbox 360 can even be considered for best hardware staggers me.

I think it's more which is the best console this year rather than which has the better build quality ¬_¬

It's more shocking that they consider the NXE at all good enough to even make the runner-up for best innovation. It may have made it slightly easier to navigate when you get used to the new system but it's far from amazing innovation. I'd have thought Mirrors Edge would have been up there instead.

I have to give Edge credit for having one of the few reviews of PoP that doesn't harp on about it's ease of gameplay as a reason for scoring it low and rather marks it down because of the poor combat and story.
