EDGE 229 - July 2011

Postby Medicine Man » Thu Jun 09, 2011 12:24 pm

New Edge is here. I guess that makes it 3 years since I started doing this (July '08 #190 was the first). That's quite a chunk of time right there.

Anyway, sorry there's no pics of the cover and all that, my daughter has my camera away on holiday with her. I'll stick up the pics when she gets back on Saturday.

That just crazy right there. They give Witcher 2 the same score as Brink, a game that was so plagued with problems on all platforms at launch it almost killed itself off over night. Infamous 2 is said to be a shadow of its former self (but Prototype > Infamous anyhow) while Dirt 3 is pretty much Dirt 2 with a step back in graphics but better gameplay. I'd say a 9 is extremely generous as it's more an 8.

I'd really like to hear some quotes from the Witcher 2 review if you'd be so kind. What did EDGE give DA2 I wonder?

They gave DA2 a 6.

The main gripes with TW2 is the slow start and then even when it does get going the main character is still as unlikeable as the first game (which they gave a 5 btw). No class choice seemed to be an issue as well. They do say there's a good game in there though.

I'll dig out some quotes after I pick up the missus from work.

How is not having a class choice a negative? They may as well dock Half-Life marks for that too.

Witcher quotes...

The obstacles between you and the fascinating RPG CD Projekt keeps threatening to make are fewer and more forgivable. But the game is still agonisingly slow to get to the good stuff, and its remaining problems are at their worst during the least interesting content.

The revised combat system is a standard combination of light and heavy attacks, dodges and blocks, but any convenience that simplicity might have offered is crippled by a maddeningly erratic targeting system. In a game where your target determines which direction you’ll dive when you dodge, or leap when you attack, being unable to switch to the right enemy is often fatal.

It’s exacerbated by the strange decision to lock off all combat conveniences for the first eight levels or so. Your sword won’t damage enemies it passes through, except the targeted one, until you’re allowed to buy that ability with a talent point. You can block only a couple of times per fight until you can upgrade your Vigor stat. You take devastating damage from rear attacks until you access a trait that reduces it, which would be fair if your orientation wasn’t at the mercy of the targeting system.

Whether The Witcher 2 is worthwhile despite its dull first act depends on whether or not its central fantasy is one you can engage with. Rather than creating a character, you’re stuck as the brooding, white-haired monster slayer Geralt. Anyone who enjoyed the role last time will be happy to bear with him while the game meanders to its point. Anyone else will need an extraordinary level of patience.

EDIT: After bashing out all that, it turns out they have posted it online...

Do not like the redesign on first glance. It seems like they have looked at Wired and copied a lot of what they have done. On top of that the overal magazine feels like it has been designed to try and appeal to a more mainstream demographic. Edge was always been different from other mags both in design and writing. Now it looks like a lot of other magazines.

Not my pic, but here you go...

Image

It's smaller in height by about 0.5cm and in width by about 3.5cm compared to the old design.
