Sounds interesting. I'm sure there's at least two other games with towns called Caldera, though (one being Morrowind) which has irritated me a little for some reason.

Piratical RPG with guns (assume it will be flintlock pistols and things like that) from the people who made Gothic and Risen, though? Could be excellent.

Devs say the PC version will be a proper hi-res experience:

Speaking with Strategy Informer, Deep Silver (publisher of Risen 2) Daniel Oberlerchner said: “I can tell you that we are going to have the optimum experience across all platforms, and they are going to be different experiences. There IS a technology gap. Some studios say they are going to have the same quality across all platforms, which is to say you take the weakest platform – the Xbox 360 – and you have the same crappy textures for the Playstation 3 and the PC.” He went on: “It was just a couple of weeks ago there was a PC game that was… *laugh* well, I don’t really want to go into details, but our decision is that we want to have a really hi-res experience on the PC. There is no reason why we should create hi-res textures, then just make them blurry for a console version, then put everything back on the PC again – it doesn’t make any sense.”

Wonder which game he's talking about.

Jim Rossignol's been playing this and has a few thoughts:

Sounds promising.

IGN have slapped a 6.5 rating on the PC game in their review...

The smaller scale of the explorable areas also means it's harder to feel lost and isolated. It's a strange decision considering a big component of Piranha Bytes' past work has been creating spaces that let you wander far off quest paths. The upside, at least for players who prefer when designers hold their hand, is a more focused experience. Risen 2 is by far Piranha Bytes' most user-friendly product.

The console versions have been delayed until August 3rd while the PC version remains firm for a 27th of April release.

Sounds like one I'll wait for a price drop before buying.

Alternatively I could buy it first and play some of it then sell it on to you for a ridiculous price which leaves me feeling rather guilty for a good 7 months. Interested?

Seriously though this seems like PB have dropped the ball rather significantly compared to what could and should have been. Then again it is IGN.

Fool me once, shame on me... -_-

Watching the video footage, the combat does look a bit uninspiring, particularly in light of recent offerings like Amalur. I'm not sure just spamming the left mouse button really cuts the mustard any more. It's also slightly disappointing they've almost completed toned down the exploration element as well, which was a big part of the fun in the Gothic games and Risen.

Wait and see further reviews, I guess.

I quite like the premise here, but am buggered if I am paying £40 for an unproven RPG.

players are giving it 4/10

Just watched the Gametraikers review - the pirates theme looks great but the generic fighting model and the samey game world throughout brings the score down. Shame
Games playing : Alan Wake American Nightmare / Metro 2033 / Total War Thrones Of Britannia / Warlock Of Firetop Mountain / Orcs Must Die / 2000:1 A Space Felony

Oof, a 61% from Mr "Dragon Age 2 94%".

Depends whether you think he doesn't know what he's talking about, or that it's THAT bad.

What an awesome demo. Downloaded it only for it to simply take me to the Steam page for the game whenever I press play. Must be a sign from the gaming gods it's not even worth playing in demo form.
