New adventures in vita crack....

Postby eVoL » Sun Apr 22, 2018 9:16 am

Ok, I know nobody here gives a shit about the Vita but this is so good!

When the 3.6 exploit was announced I bought another Vita and stuck the 3.6 in a cupboard to let the scene mature so that later on it could replace my PSPGo as my keep in my bag at work for downtime toy. Does it ever!

So what can you do with it other than emulation? Natively on the machine you can play;
AM2R - woop
Doom / Heretic / Hexen. - Plays great! Its a port of Chocolate Doom and its currently my go to time killer.
Quake 1, Quake 2, Quake 3 - All play great! Theres even some online mp servers!
Half Life - Someone ported the GoldSrc engine over and all you need to do is add your HL game files. Frame rate holds up well (low 20s at worst, 60 at best) considering how early it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nZvA5FRzyI You can even run mods that dont use external assets (They Hunger for example)
Counterstrike - Same as HL! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbuaK4MzLF4
Heroes Of Might And Magic 2
Fade To Black / Another World / Flashback
EasyRPG Player - plays rpgs made in RPG maker
Tyrian - because its on everything so why not
.....and more Ive not gotten to yet.
You can also stream games from PC much like you can on a PS4->Vita. I believe it uses the Nvidia protocols. Ive not tried it yet.

Emulation wise it will do anything up to SNES/Megadrive. It will also fully emulate a PSP which includes near 100% PS1 compatibility. It doesnt do N64 yet because the Vita doesnt like openGL but folk have written an openGL codebase for it so that could be in the pipe.
Retroarch
ScummVM
UAE4All (Amiga)
FBA (arcade, mainly capcom CPS) - I got excited about pocket CvS2 for a second forgetting it was running on Naomi :( Really interested in how it handles CPS3 games....
Mame

It even has a "store app" for downloading homebrew apps and emulators. Surprisingly slick too.

So yeah, the bedroom coders are kind of killing it on this little beast. Always loved the Vita before but this just cements it more as just a brilliant bit of kit that Sony really fucked up and fucked over.
If you can get your hands on a 3.60 or earlier Vita I heartily recommend it for all these hacky funtime shenanigans. The hack is very easy by the way, all you do is visit a web page.

Hell I would heartily recommend picking up a fully updated non hackable Vita too though
Man I hope theres a Vita2 at some point and its not a massive brick like the Switch.

Hey I give a shit about the Vita!

This sounds great. I may dabble if I can suss it out before my trip to London next month.

The thought of playing through Doom again on the train makes me giddy inside. :D

All week i've been contemplating picking up a Vita for £60. Well now i've made my final decision, off I go to pick one up tomorrow. (£60 is a pretty decent price for one!)

Remember it has to be firmware 3.60 or lower for the home brew shindiggery. If it’s been upgraded beyond that there’s no current way of doing it.

Not yet but its still early days. Might want to stick on that FW as long as you can.

Also, ChocolateDoom runs the Strife wad! Yas!

Ach, nightmare.

I stick with what I'm on then and hope things change in the future.

No Doom on the train for me. :(

Could buy a cheap PSP and crack it and just run the PS1 Doom ports on it ;)

:-k

What's a PSP going for these days anyway? The 3000 is the one with the shitty screen right?

The 1000 has a terrible screen. I think all the slim models were fine. The Go is neat, cute and compact but I find it incredibly uncomfortable and the buttons aren’t great.

CEX have the PSP urban for £40 I think - that’s a matte black model that has no WiFi and a mono speaker.

BUT

PSP only has a single stick and the ps1 Doom uses a password save system if i remember right. I can’t remember how good the engine port to it is but I’d imagine is decent.

Always fancied a PSP go at the time and never got around to it. I may have a nose around for one despite the carpal tunnel and honking controls. Thanks eVoL!

If you want one pre-set up with CFW and emulators etc. I could flog you mine. Doubt I’ll use it much now, was thinking about ebaying it anyhoo. It’s either got a 8 or 16gb memory card in it (surprisingly hard to buy M2 cards there days!) plus the 16gb internal storage.

It’s a cool wee machine if it wasn’t so uncomfortable! I also think my thumb web is abnormal because I have more than once turned it off mid game because of where the power switch is! (Bottom right). It’s no GBA Micro, that’s for sure! ;)

That's good of you eVoL, but sadly I don't think I could afford it without denting the wife's sending money kitty in a noticeable way.

Slightly out of my reach at the moment despite how great it would be. Thanks for the offer though.

If you have a decent phone you could give the PPSSPP emulator a try!

Or ePSXe.

No physical controls is such a pain though...

No worries, another month I’d probably just have gave you it but I spent stupidly too much on m’ladys birthday so eBay it is! ;)
