The Witness [iOS, PC, PS4] - Jon Blow's Next Game

Postby Medicine Man » Thu Sep 17, 2015 4:41 pm

No thread for The Witness?! Surely not?

Anyway release date announced as the 26th January 2016. Later than I'd like, but sounds like a great way to start the year to me. :)

There is no thread because nobody really cares mate. :P

Seriously though this game has been in development for so long and the way they have talked about it at times makes the whole team sound like a bunch of nobs. To me it just looks like a modern day Myst.

Pre-orders are up and the game will cost £29.99, or you can save £1 by pre-ordering it on the Humble Store. I bet there is a fair bit of ire going around about that price as people consider it an indy game and there is a certain expectation when it comes to price with indy titles. Personally I can't quite bring myself to pay £30 for a puzzle game, but it sounds like there is enough content in the game to justify the price. Also he has to try and make some money back after the 6+ years of development.

I am in. Regardless of the price.

People will moan whatever the price is.They'll never be happy. They did the same with Braid. Nope Jon Blow, the profession Prey lookalike, has my cash without hesitation. Can't wait. :D

Every time I see "Jonathan Blows The Witness" I giggle.

As for the game, I think there must be some subversion of the things known about it because everything thats out there just looks kind of crappy. Turned off even more by how many puzzles he says is in it. See what review say.

It's the kind of game that I would pick up for a tenner off a key site.

Reviews have started hitting. I'm surprised the Eurogamer reviewer was able to write the review, what with him having their heads shoved up Blow's butt.

Sounds good. I'm all for this type of game. Loved Talos, will no doubt love this. Roll on pay day.

Just had a quick shot before heading out to work. Can't say much about the puzzles yet, so far so tutorialy and all that. It's mighty purdy though...

Not that I noticed the vistas right enough from up Jon Blows ass. Come on in Dj the colon's lovely! :D

What I've seen so far I would play on iOS as a series of puzzles. As an 80 hour wander around wondering what the fuck to do game it seems to time wastey and just isn't my thing. I'll maybe try it in the humble monthly bundle Jan of 2017.

It looks like a kid friendly Myst. Not sure whether that really interests me or not.

Don't worry mate according to the reviews some of the puzzles are really hard so I'm sure it will be challenging enough.

Just on the Talos Principle comparison I think that is an interesting one. Some reviews have made that link by saying that they think it does a better job of telling an overarching story in a puzzle game with the Witness not really having the same kind of story. Others seem to have completely forgotten about the Talos Principle and are praising the Witness for being a puzzle game that tells a story.

It's interesting to see that some people say there is a story and others don't. After Braid perhaps people are looking too closely for a hidden story/meaning and seeing one that perhaps isn't there. Sometimes a door is painted red because the person likes red.

If this game really is on a par with the Talos Principle then I will be picking it up as that game was ace.
