OG-XBOXAGEDDON - and upscaling units.

Postby Subway Diet » Tue Aug 13, 2013 9:22 am

Came around the the realisation that now is the prime-time to collect Xbox games. The vast majority of games coming in somewhere between 50p and 4 quid, with the most sought after barely pushing 15 in the more extreme cases.

So, spending the same amount of cash that you would on a modern 5 hour long corridor man-shoot game, I picked up the following:

Spoiler: show
America's Army: Rise of a Soldier
Amped2
Area-51
Blinx 1 / 2
Crimson Skies
Darkwatch
Fight Night 2004 / Round 2
Final Fight: Streetwise
Freedom Fighters
Full Spectrum Warrior
Galleon
Genma Onimusha
Ghost Recon 2
Men of Valo(u)r
Mercenaries
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
Ninja Gaiden
Project Snowblind
Project Gotham Racing
Psi-Ops
The Punisher
Rainbow Six 3
Shadow The Hedgehog
Shellshock Nam 67
SWAT: Global Operations
True Crime: Streets of LA/NY
Urban Chaos: Riot Response
Xmen Legends

On top of those, I've got these on their way to me in the post:

Spoiler: show
Gunvalkyrie
Jet Set Radio Future
Razes Hell
Project Zero
Project Zero 2
Otogi 2
Otogi - Myth Of Demons
Kingdom Under Fire - The Crusaders
Kingdom Under Fire - Heroes
Ghost Recon 2 Summit Strike
Rainbow Six: Black Arrow
RalliSport Challenge
Rallisport Challenge 2
MechAssault
Mechassault 2 - Lone Wolf
X-Men Legends II: Rise Of Apocalypse
Marc Ecko's Getting Up
Metal Arms - Glitch In The System
The Thing
Pirates - The Legend Of Black Kat
Soldier of Fortune 2 - Double Helix
Headhunter Redemption
Minority Report

And just because I'm making lists, here are all the games I've had for a while, some of them the ones I bought with the Xbox back in 2003.

Spoiler: show
Beyond Good & Evil
Black
Breakdown
Close Combat: First to fight
Colin McRae Rally 04 / 05
Conker: Live & Reloaded
Crimson Sea
Doom3
Evil Dead: Fistful of Boomstick
Grabbed by the Ghoulies
Halo 1 / 2
Enter the Matrix / The Path of Neo
Midtown Madness 3
Metal Slug 4
Oddworld: Strangers Wrath
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Phantasy Star Online
Project Gotham Racing 2
Psychonauts
Red Dead Revolver
Rogue Trooper
Scrapland
Shenmue 2
Toejam & Earl 3
The Warriors
Yager

Ohh crap... that's a lot of Xbox games.
Well, while everyone else is going doolally-tap over new consoles, I know what I'll be playing. :D

-

That said, my next thought is trying to find a way to play these though my PC monitor. Using a 360 is out as hardly any of those games are supported and less work though the VGA cables. And while I could try rigging up a scart/component to VGA setup, I imagine it would cause my eyes to bleed from the zero-up-scaling madness.

Might be total overkill, but I was thinking of something like this might be the solution: http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/framemeister.html
Plug that bad-boy into my AV unit and that's pretty much every pre Gen-7 console ready to go and super crispy looking. Downside is that it's super videophile fiddly and costs near 300 smackers.

Buuuut it'll make my Mega Drive look so good. :-k

Makes you realise just how many rubbish Xbox games there are out there. PS2 is an even worse offender, there are stacks and stacks of utterly terrible second hand copies of PS2 games at CEX.

Interesting idea though. I had the same train of thought regarding the PS2 last year and ended up buying a new console for £15 and about thirty games for it.

Best use for an old Xbox is modding it with a bigger HDD and making it an emulation machine with the 10 or so Xbox games that are still worth a damn on it (Conker L&R for example ^_^). Or buy Steel Battalion and make a SB enclosure.

Slightly unrelated but also related - I found my GBA-micro yesterday and what a fantastic machine that is! I barely used it when I got it so its been lying there for around 8 years and the battery has still held its charge! Have Street Fighter Alpha (surprisingly playable) and Castlevania Circle Of The Moon (one of my favs of the series). It got me thinking of all the fantastic GBA games there are (probably still my fav handheld) and I'm getting a wee bit excited at the prospect of buying some again.... or... possibly just a flashcart for portability at this stage tbh. Ninja 5-0, Advance Wars, Pokemon Fire/Leaf, Golden Suns, Marios, Zelda Minish (seriously, Capcom are the only company that can make good Zelda games), Castlevanias, Warioware, FFT, Rainbow Six(SUCH a great game!), Metroids etc.... I could stick them on PSP but the micro is so small and just perfect!

Height of Nintendos awesome that gen, GBA+Gamecube was just amazing.

No one really give a shit, but here we go.

Decided to end my Xbox buying run on a few screamers. A choice selection that made it onto the Gamerankings Worst-of List.

Beatdown: Fists of Vengeance
NARC
Without Warning
And, not really that terrible, but just a bit bland - CT Special Forces: Fire for Effect.

I'm pretty content with this pile of games, though I can't help but wonder what I'm missing?

Big names that I know of but can't be gassed buying are things like KotOR/Jade Empire, Theif:DS/DX:IW (Better on PC) and the Burnout games (100%ed those bastards back in the day). Steel Battalion would be fun but it's overkill for my collection. :P

If there's nothing left to get, the next challenge is to find a way to comfortably play the games. To buy a good CRT or get an upscaler? Hmm! Oh, those first world problems. :-k

GRABBED BY THE GHOULIES!!!!!!

One of the best and most sorely underrated Xbox games. Microsoft would do well to let Rare have another crack at this franchise on the One.

Well, shit.

More Xbox games. CEX is just giving them away at this point.

Spoiler: show
007 - Nightfire
007 - Everything Or Nothing
007 - From Russia With Love
007 - Agent Under Fire
Aeon Flux
Amped
Armed and Dangerous
Brute Force
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds
Conflict: Desert Storm
Conflict: Desert Storm 2
Conflict: Global Storm
Conflict: Vietnam
Die Hard: Vendetta
Far Cry Instincts
Far Cry Instincts: Evolution
Full Spectrum Warrior - Ten Hammers
Hello Kitty: Roller Rescue
Medal of Honor: European Assault
Medal of Honor: Frontline
Medal of Honor: Rising Sun
Midway Arcade Treasures 1,2 and 3
Pariah
Phantom Crash
Shadow Ops Red Mercury
Spartan Total Warrior
Sudeki
Terminator - Dawn of Fate
Terminator 3 - Redemption
Terminator 3 - Rise of the Machines
The Suffering
The Suffering - Ties That Bind
Tron 2.0: Killer App

I realise I'm walking into a couple of clankers here. Still, got to get my fix early 00's crap. Janky, old-ass shooters, right into my vein.

Can't really think of any other Xbox games that interest me, asside from Steel Battalion, but that's hardly worth the hassle.
Certainly can't be gassed modding the damn thing just to import the one or two worthwhile US/Japan only games. Sorry, Phantom Dust.

Any way, that brings me up to about 130 odd games... woo. Considering some of these games are considered the worst of the worst and the rest are aging badly, it's not something to be too proud of. :P

Oh wait. I forgot about Voodoo Vince. #-o

The Desert Storm games are such huge parts of my teenage years. I've got incredibly fond memories of them.

Apart from Global Storm, that was utterly dire.

I've yet to try that one or Vietnam.
I can say that, from playing the demo, Conflict: Denied Ops was just the worst.

Weird little series of games. They pretty much bolted the concept on to whatever war was in gaming vogue at the time.

Just re-read the list of games you got and spotted Full Spectrum Warrior. That was a damn enjoyable game.

I'm looking forward to getting stuck into that one at some point. Had considered the PC version, but as much as the visuals and frame rate are improved, the control system just didn't seem to translate right.

One game that has really surprised me is Urban Chaos: Riot Response. Nothing to do with the old open world game, it's actually what Rocksteady did before the the Arkham series. It's a cop themed FPS that has you undertaking various missions in a city under siege by crazy gangs.
The moment to moment gameplay is damn solid for a post-Halo, pre-CoD4 console shooter, with lots of little stylistic touches that bring it above it's peers. I'm particularly fond of the dramatic slow mo ragdolling when you take a dude down, which is pretty much the same effect used when you finish a brawl in one of the Batman games.

What really seals the deal are the challenges. Little arcade-style extra objectives that can make missions surprisingly repayable. Completing them earns you extra points that unlock new weapons and stat boosts.
I'm really impressed with how it mixes "story" driven FPS with arcade challenges. Previously, it was pretty much one or the other.

So, yeah. Worth a look if, like me, you're into creaky old console games. :P

I always had a soft spot for Def Jam: Fight For New York. A game that ends with you kicking Snoop Dogg out of a window.

Oh yeah, Fight for NY was amazing. I'll certainly be on the look out for it.

Now I'm just trying to think if there's anything worth a damn left to get. All I can think of are a few naff platformers (which I'd never play anyway), A handful of region locked US games (not going to mod my system) and Steel Battalion (can't be arsed tracking on down and paying the massive asking price for something that, honestly, looks pretty ropey).

Got way more than enough to be getting on with anyway.

My next project: Buy a soldering iron, mod a Saturn! :P
