I was quite partial to the ol' periwinkle blue boxart.

I think it depends on the artwork. Some game covers lend themselves better to the blue style.

Case in point:

The last boss is a twat.

I still remember the password to skip to the final act of that game.

It took me years to beat the boss though; he's got like five stages.

Aside from the design of the blue covers, my main issue is that it signaled the move away from the glorious air brushed art of the old boxes to a modern, digital look.

You would never see something so crude on a blue box.

Seriously, if someone unearthed the original painting for the Mercs cover and made high quality prints available, I'd have one on my wall like *that*.

Just got a gen 1 - model 1 Euro Mega Drive. The original "High Definition Graphics - Stereo Sound" version. Came with one of the old pads with the inked red lettering and all.

Three reasons I sought out one of those specifically.

First, and most important: I had one of those when I was a kid. I've no affection for the model 2. I'd go so far as to call it the physical embodiment of the Blue Box era.
Secondly, these early model 1's are meant to have better sound. Not sure why, but that's what I've been told.
And, finally, the MDII I have is quite touchy. It was starting to need more and more resetting and waggling of carts needed to get it to run. Plugged Streets of Rage 2 in to this gen 1 and it kicked off perfectly. :)

I'm dead chuffed with it.

Sounds great Rob, check around on Ebay as there are people that make Megadrive-intended 3.5mm jack to SCART leads for modern TVs, that is unless you have the 3.5 to phono cable and your own converter and could do it manually.

Even though I only ended up with 12 or so MD games and flogged two of them, it was quality not quantity including the freebie Sonic in the early 1990s pack. One day I'll have to fire it up again once I sort out that cable.

Aye. Had a bit of a clear out of games recently. Taking a long hard look at what I actually enjoy playing, and what I just collected for the hell of it and would probably never touch again. Quality over quantity, as you said. :)

I've been waiting for RetroComputerShack on eBay to come back from their break so I can pick up one of the fancy SCART cables for the system.

But, before then, there's a few games I want to pick up. Rambo III and ESWAT look right up my alley, while Zero Tolerance and Alien Storm are favorites of mine.

Someone needs to tell me why I shouldn't pay 80 quid for a copy of Alien Solder.

Might be on to something there. :-k

That money might be better spent on one of those carts that takes SD cards, so you can play roms on original hardware. Good call!
