Oh hey. This thread.
So, Master System and Saturn restoration and game collecting has stalled big time. Nothing new to say on either front. Didn't even manage to get a new controller for the Saturn.

I have picked up two "classics" for the Mega Drive recently, though.
Mystic Defender and Rambo 3, two early games for the system.

Rambo, in particular, I've been meaning to pick up for a long time as I've a real soft spot for run 'n gun shooters like Mercs.

Not wanting to cart my Mega Drive, NES and SNES up to the flat, I picked up one of those multi-console clones: the Super Retro-Trio.
In preparation for it's arrival, I went back to my old house today and got all the old cart games out of storage.

Perhaps a massive Faux-Pas, but I didn't bring the cases with me.
Still, the nostalgia and love of Mega Drive is very much real.

The five up front didn't have their names on the end labels. It's expected that Arena would be a bit rubbish, but for those Blue Box games to drop the ball? That's just sloppy and terrible.

Also, I hear plugging Pit-Fighter into S&K gives you a bonus. The bonus of not having to play an absolute dreadful shit-show of a game!

And screw EA and their dumb carts.

I impulse purchased a Sega Saturn for cheap with the wheel and Sega Rally. The pad was a mess and broken but the game and wheel works. Sega Rally with the wheel really feels like the arcade cabinet version. I'm impressed!
Anywho the PAL Saturn is a crippled 50hz machine. Anyone modded theirs for 60hz & region free play? Is it worth the investment?

Saturn pads seem to break like nobodies business. Doesn't help that they're pretty rare now as well.
Was ready to go in deep with modding stuff, but doing researching into it made the whole thing sound like a real mission. On top of that, I'd need to fix the failing laser in my system but the parts for that are rare as well.
The whole thing was starting to look like it'd cost a bomb.

Man, I want to love the Saturn, but it's just so... fragile.

The Saturn I got looked as if it was kicked around a lot. The pad looked like it was ran over by a car, the wires were torn by the connector pins. I took the pins out and went about soldering the wires to them, but then noticed that one pin was missing. So fuck it i'll buy a new pad later.
I missed out on a third party pad for £3! They can be cheap, its just people put them at silly starting prices. Oh, they can be around £10 from Japan too. They should work like normal.

Hmm bailed out modding the Saturn? If I ever get around to it i'll let y'all know how it went!
(From what i've seen the modchip needs two wires for power and two wires + a switch to deal with the 50\60hz thing.)

Therein lies the problem. I've no soldering tools or experience using them. That alone would make it a somewhat more costly endeavour.

Still, I look forward to hearing how you get on with it. I'd love to have a 60hz machine that was region free and could play disk back-ups. The best games didn't come out in the UK and cost upwards of way-too-f-ing-much.
