Escape the Dark Castle: Game Over

Postby Mournblade » Thu May 24, 2018 7:02 pm

Hey guys,

Sorry I completely abandoned you all in the middle of our Warhammer Quest and Talisman sessions two years ago. As I explained in my new blog, I was busy bringing another tiny human into existence and had to go take care of things for a while. I also sold those games... ¬_¬

I do miss the fun times we had playing board games together those two years ago, so TODAY I am going to begin something new.

We're going to play a game called...

...released earlier this year by a British startup company called Themeborne.

We need four volunteers to play the game.

Each player takes on the role of a prisoner, wrongfully incarcerated in a sinister, dark castle, full of evil denizens, vile monsters and foul traps!

The game plays out like a story, in Chapters, and each Chapter the players have to deal with some new situation. The ultimate goal is to defeat the final boss and.... ESCAPE THE DARK CASTLE!!!

Who's up for it?

Actually there's plenty of that already. The Cook and the Smith are the Muscle. The Abbot has Wisdom.

What we need now is somebody with Cunning, such as the Hunter, Tailor or Miller...

Is it minimum 4 volunteers or is that the most we can have for the game?

Four is the max. You can have one, two or three as well.

Okay, here are the basic rules (without trying to re-write the rulebook):

You move as a group through the Dark Castle, working your way chapter by chapter through a randomly unfolding narrative.

Each of you has 12 HP (Health Points).

You can each carry up to two items (one item per hand), but no more. There are no pockets, belts, or bags to put items in. Some items require two hands to hold, in which case you can only carry that one item. Items can be dropped, traded or gifted as you please, but only "between chapters". During a chapter, you may only make use of what you are currently holding.

Each time a chapter begins, the group nominates a "leader" to face whatever challenge the chapter contains. All members of the group may, depending on the situation, take part in the challenge, but the leader is the one who bears the brunt of it, as it were.

You will find yourself in deadly hand-to-hand combat more than you're comfortable with. During a combat, any player in the group (but only one at a time) can opt to "sit out" of the combat if they wish. This allows them to heal 1 HP, and they're safe from any damage delivered by the enemy at hand. However, any items the resting player is carrying cannot be used by the active players. This means that, while the individual player may gain a much-needed life from sitting out, the fighting strength of the group will be diminished for that combat round.

The strength (and weaknesses) of your currently selected team are this:

PWF Name: Wrathbone
Role: Abbot
Might: 3
Wisdom: 4
Cunning: 1

PWF Name: Sly Boots
Role: Smith
Might: 4
Wisdom: 3
Cunning: 1

PWF Name: Katarn
Role: Cook
Might: 4
Wisdom: 1
Cunning: 3

PWF Name: Jez
Role: Tailor
Might: 1
Wisdom: 3
Cunning: 4

Pretty well balanced, I'd say! Keep a note of your stats and your Health Points.
