Westminster attack

Postby Sly Boots » Wed Mar 22, 2017 3:58 pm

Reports of a shooting near Parliament, around 12 reported injured at the moment. Not sure of the full details yet as only just got back from the school run to see it.

Scary stuff.

What we know so far:

- A policeman has been stabbed and his attacker shot by officers at the House of Parliament
- Police are treating it as a "terrorist incident"
- The attacker is reported to have mowed down several pedestrians as he drove a grey Hyundai car across Westminster Bridge before crashing it into railings
- He is then reported to have run through the gates of the Palace of Westminster and stabbed the officer
- Eyewitnesses said he was shot by police as he approached a second officer clutching his knife
- House of Commons and Lords in lockdown - as is nearby St Thomas's hospital
- Public urged to avoid the area and Westminster Underground station is closed
- Prime Minister Theresa May was seen being ushered into a silver Jaguar in the grounds of the Palace of Westminster as what sounded like gunfire rang out at around 14:45 GMT
- A Downing Street source confirmed the prime minster was "OK".

I've been watching the BBC News channel for the last 40 minutes or so.

Police are treating it as a terrorist incident until it's proven otherwise, there's not been any confirmation that it is one.

Bomb squad been called to an unattended vehicle nearby with a suspect package.

Also hearing that one of the injured people has died, but not seen that confirmed on the BBC feed as yet.

I'm currently trapped in work, was all pretty crazy when it first kicked off. Calmed down a bit now though.

Thanks mate. The building I work in is at the far end of what is termed as the "Estate", so quite a bit away from all the action.

I don't really see how an armed maniac mowing people down and rushing parliament with a knife can be classed as anything other than a terrorist incident.

I agree, but I guess the word carries such severe connotations that they want to know for sure that a terrorist group is behind it, as opposed to a lone nutter who's taken it into his own head to do this, before calling it that.

Even a single person with their own agenda would be classed as a terrorist attack. I think when people hear terrorist attack they instantly think Muslim terrorism.

Suicide by police, nutter who doesn't like the Metropolitan Police, vendetta against an MP or other government official... it could be anything. We don't even know if the casualties on the bridge were intentional, maybe the guy just needed a run up to attempt to get through the defenses around the Palace.

Terrorism tends to have civilian targets in unexpected places, the idea being to terrorise people into thinking that nowhere is safe.

Apparently the policeman who was stabbed has now died.

Horrible thing to have happened.

Aye not good. I took my first ever trip to London in October and had a lovely day including walking that very same stretch. Thoughts with all. We need a roll call.

Four dead including the Police Officer and the attacker. At least 20 injured. There was just one attacker, despite what some places were reporting.
