Our youngest cat Beauty was sadly put down today after mysteriously becoming seriously ill over the last week. She had spent most nights sleeping outside on one of the garden chairs due to the obscene hot weather and one morning we noticed she had a red weepy eye which became an aggressive infection in just the last 24 hours, her eye was crusted over completely. This particular morning she was unable to even jump on to a chair and this is the same cat that would normally dart out of an open door and half way up a bloody tree plus she was neither eating or drinking.

I knew she wouldn't be coming home today and it literally was the only choice to stop her suffering as her eye had all but disappeared and her head had quickly developed a golf ball size lump. The thing is she never once complained as it took hold, she never cried. Not once. Most of us have done nothing but since coming home from the vets.

One thing I will miss dearly is just how much she loved the summer weather, bounding into the long grass and then jumping from spot to spot full of life. She was so full of life I wrongly told the vet she was only 5 when it turns out she was actually 10 or even older. A tough day for my daughter who has now lost her first pet today. Goodbye Beauty. A better place may you now know, hopefully it has long grass there and you instantly feel right at home.

Sorry for the downer, you just don't tend to realise how attached you are to your pets and how you take them for granted each day until one day they are no longer around.

Will you get a new cat, do you think?

Sorry to hear that Prey. Growing up we probably had a dozen cats at one point or another, lost some to illness, one hit by a car, most old age and having to be put down... it never gets any easier :(

Thanks chaps. Life is so very precious in its many forms. We actually have two other cats that are much older but Beauty was the last one we took in from a neighbour who was found to be mistreating her and didn't want to take her when they moved away. The funny thing is the oldest who spent 5 years sleeping rough at the bottom of our garden and who we also took in after feeding her down there every day has never had a single ailment in the 15 years we have now had her, it's actually quite amazing and she looks no different from when we first saw her down at the bottom of that hill.

She now jumps on to my bed every single night without fail and falls asleep purring on my chest with her furry chin resting gently on my hand. How people can hate cats I will never ever know.

Aww :(

I know how much the death of one of our two cats would affect me, so I'll offer my sympathies. And go and hug mine.

I think I can understand why people don't like cats though. They're very independent, frequently offering little affection to show for your efforts, and they shit in your neighbours' gardens. But just look at their stupid little faces, they're adorable. Image

Sorry to hear that Dave, we would be pretty upset if one of our cats died.

These are our two.

The cable under the chair wheel in that first photo makes me uneasy...

 That would be my wife's DVD and that's not a cable it's a piece of string the cats play with.
