The 'I Just Bought Thread' - Normal Edition

Postby Mantis » Mon Jan 14, 2013 6:32 pm

Because, y'know, we've had a tech version for so long it strikes me as odd that we wouldn't bother with a normal one for all those weird things we might randomly purchase. Surely we all buy more non-tech stuff than we do computery stuff?

So what did you just buy? A new kind of exotically flavoured spam? A rowing machine? Perhaps a new sofa because the old one had too many white stains on? Do share.

I just ordered one of these things:

In preparation for an attempted 7 day juice fast. Go, new years resolution!

I'm no expert, but a juice fast seems like a terrible idea.

I haven't bought anything interesting for months :(

I bought us a breadmaker last weekend. It's not the world's most exciting appliance, but as we both love having fresh bread, it's definitely worth it.

I bought The Mist on bluray, a hand axe, a 15m length of rope, and Zig Zag rolling papers.

I bought myself a food processor so that I could make some of Jamie's 15 minute meals.

That's going in a cupboard within a week, never to see the light of day for years.

Yup. Although in my family we mostly shunt stuff like that around the various parents' and siblings' houses until everyone's had it sitting in their cupboards for a while. Then, charity shops.

I bought two saris, one of those indian tunic and trouser outfits, loads of bangles and a few pashminas. Because larp.

My amazon "recommended" thing is now even more confused than it was in the first place, they're trying to sell me ethnic bridal clothing and power tools.

Urgh. My Amazon recommended items list was suggesting bongs that look like a penis for ages after someone linked one to me to show how stupid they looked. In fact I think it was someone on this bloody forum.

Nah, it's actually a really good way to detox yourself.

The thing with all these appliances is you'll never touch them again after 6 months.

Perhaps that was a poor choice of words then. It's not intended as a means of weight loss, nor am I using any sort of pills or silly concoctions from the internet. Your body can survive perfectly well on the nutrition you get from fruits and vegetables, vegetarians clearly manage. And you actually get more benefit from eating them raw, whether that's in juice or solid form. That BBC article is about detox in terms of facial care products anyway, not diet. The caption for the photo even says 'Eating fruit and vegetables is the best way to feel healthy'. :P Also, the first link says:

Her list of the top natural detox foods includes: green leafy vegetables, lemons, watercress, green tea, broccoli sprouts, sesame seeds, cabbage, psyllium (powdered fiber), and fruits.

A lot of those will be the kinds of stuff going into the juice; which is the point, it's a 'natural detox' using the articles terms. The article is clearly mainly referring to the kinds of 'detox' that gets marketed in all these crazy diet pills and such. Anyway, one article says scientists have found whole vegetable diets to be a myth, another says scientists find it to be effective. Just because 'scientists' have studied something and it's been reported on a website doesn't make it infallible.

The main reason I'm doing it is to avoid consuming anything unnatural and processed for a week to see how it effects the general state of my health. More as an experiment than any kind of sudden conversion to die hard dieting. A week later and I'll tell you whether it made me feel better or worse. As soon as it's over I'll be switching back to a balanced diet that's more in line with what I normally eat, only including more fresh juice.

You'll lose weight then regain it when you switch back the proper diet.

Careful drinking too much fruit juice, it'll rot your teeth.
