Is this worth upgrading?

Postby Jez » Sun Apr 23, 2017 1:43 pm

My system is about 5 years old aside from extra ram and a 980ti GPU.

My cpu is an i7-3770k running at 3.5ghz and motherboard is an Asus Sabertooth z77.

Like I said it's about 5 years old now. Those two components. I was thinking about upgrading the cpu to something more recent. Is it worth an upgrade? If so cost isn't a big issue.

Cheers tech savvy forum people's.

If you are not in a rush then I would say you should wait and see how the new AMD CPUs pan out.

Yeah no particular rush just felt it with being 5 years old it might be getting well behind by now.

It really isn't behind. I'm running a 5 year old i5 and it still nails most new games at close to 100fps on high unless I really go crazy with certain settings. I've still got DDR3 memory too and it really doesn't make any difference. A lot of modern games are more GPU heavy because of the nature of the console designs, so long as you've got a decent card to back everything up you should be fine.

CPU architecture hasn't really moved on that much at all over the last few years because Intel have had such a dominant position in the market. Sure, you could get a Kaby Lake i7 and boost your frames by 30-40; but if you're already running everything comfortably then there's really no need. Hopefully Ryzen from AMD will force them to up their game in the next couple of years rather then releasing small incremental improvements.

Roger mate. Thanks for the clear up. I'll probably hang on for a few more years then buy a whole new system from scratch.

If you really start to notice it isn't quite holding up with the latest games then you would probably be better off just spending £30 on some cooling and overclocking the thing. Intel CPUs are always very good on the OCing front.

Yeah I hadn't really thought of that what with having no experience with over clocking. I have it attached to a corsair h100 liquid cooler. Might have a look in the motherboard bios software thingy and see if there are any options in there to soup it up a little.

Check your motherboards website, most motherboards nowadays come with software you can use to overclock your CPU from within windows.

Being asus hopefully they'll have that option. Might have a look into flashing bios also never done that before.

I must say, while the new AMD hardware may affect the prices of current kit, I would not touch an AMD processor or GFX card with a shitty stick. They just have too long a history of issues for gaming (be it their hardware or just the lack of support it gets) for me to ever seriously entertain buying.

Jez, if you have new PC lust, and have the cash to splurge, I would say to do it mate. I did 2 years back (bought from Chillblast) and have not regretted it for a moment.

The thing is, there is always a reason to wait. Always that next big technology revolution waiting in the wings. They always tend to turn out to be a bit of a wet fart as opposed to a titanic step-change in the technical landscape.

Dooooooo itttttttt....

Hahaha I'm tempted. But I can't justify a whole change really. It would just be spending because I have a bit of an itch. Think I'll plump for a whole new one in about 2 years though for sure.

Haven't heard of that chillblast company. I used pcspecialist for the current system last time round.

They are absolutely top drawer - superb build and after-care and warranty that is second to none.
