Stopgap GPU for Win 10 on old machine

As the title thread suggests there is no point spending £200 for something top of the range and having the card underpowered in a dual core machine until the end of the year to Feb when AMD Zen arrives. After a really good innings it's time for the old GPU to go (cheers Mantis!) as Win 10 just doesn't like anything other than 2D work, crashing to black and not giving you a desktop despite working for a few hours at a time.

So out of all the Radeon cards supported in Win10 which has the best price to performance for a dual core PC with 4 Gigs and DDR2? Not sure I could even find the 7700 or 8500 anymore so we're talking;

R7 200 and 300 series

R9 200 and 300 series

and whatever the Nvidia equivalents are but as an example the last sale price I saw in Maplin was 80 quid for an R7, and am assuming online would be cheaper. Sadly can't wait for the August bank hol when I know there would be another deal which is another reason for not caring about getting a performance card yet, by the time I actually build this Unicorn PC things will have moved on again.

What are your current PC specs?

Athlon X2 @ 2.3Ghz (can't remember the model now)
4Gb DDR 2
Mechanical HDD, usually 1Tb

Will recycle the PSU and drives most likely but that's what matters speed-wise, so like I said a R9 380X (which I've read about as being near top of the current range) would be a waste right now.

I wouldn't spend too much.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Radeon-Gra ... rds=R7+240

Or even

https://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-HD-545X-ZC ... words=5450

But it depends what you're wanting to do with it when you say anything other than 2D work crashes your current card in Windows 10. What 3D work are you doing? Gaming?

The only gaming happening on this PC is old Source stuff as it struggles with Max Payne 3 and not being a Quad core I won't be playing the last two Wolfensteins until I upgrade. Everything else is 2D so maybe only the Youtube video+ audio editing stuff is that demanding after games.

Even so, Win 10's been around a year so the R7 sounds like the better option of the two. If the slowest R9 is still quicker than the fastest R7 will still check those prices in case there's a decent bank holiday deal. Cheers Mojo! :)

Will see if I can find it if you like.

...and that's why this forum is great! :) That'd be a lifesaver Tichinde, cheers, though naturally if posting it I'd pay the right packet rate rather than just trying to send it using a jiffybag (yep, that actually happened with a soundcard once) so if you find it, get it weighed up and let me know the right price.

Not sure what was so Limited Edition about it mind.

You'll need a 550W PSU to run it (500W won't do the job).

Now replied so look forward to sorting things out and tidying up my wiring so that card will fit in the case!
