SSDs - Benefits in gaming?

Postby Monkey » Thu Feb 04, 2016 11:20 am

Good read with interesting results.

Game Performance Using Different Storage Media

TL;DR
From the data collected, storage devices have little to no impact on performance while the game is running. Where it impacts the most is where there’s lots of loading, such as starting a new game, loading a new level, or loading from a save file.

Games with smaller maps to act as game levels, such as first-person shooters, strategy games, and action games, can remain on an HDD without fear of performance loss during gameplay.

Detailed open-world games, such as GTA V and Fallout 4, should be on an SSD, and games that you’ve heavily modded.

So internet PC journalism has come down to stating the obvious....
Bless 'em :)

I especially like this quote:
A low-end processor or video card will hurt your performance more than running on an HDD

Litrally that is what journalism comes down to now a days, half the articles on most of these websites are adverts.

I know half the stuff is stating the obvious which I just skip over...
but It was quiet intresting to see that The Witcher 3 had better responce times on a HDD than a NVMe SSD, which goes against the 'load of a big map is better on SSD' statement.

Just re-read it as I'm not in work.

Tichys article review:
Terrible article, terrible methodology, lack of testing parameters, terrible choice of games for tests (CoH? An MMO? Are you mad?), answering a question no one ever asked, or claimed (except possibly by a PC World employee).

1/10: would use to show people how not to do stuff so has some merit.

;)
