Buying a 980 GPU

Postby Jez » Wed Dec 09, 2015 1:11 pm

Just some quick advice guys please.

Have some money burning a hole thought maybe an upgrade might be a nice xmas pressie to myself.

I currently have a 780GTX which i bought in August 2013. Would buying a 980 (not sure on version) be a decent jump at this point to make?

Ive also bought some more RAM - i had 8Gb in there but went for another 8Gb to top that up

Looks like an increase across the board:

So here is a comparison between a GTX 770, a GTX 780 and GTX 780 Ti and here is a comparison between a 780Ti and 980Ti.

I dare say you'd see a decent increase in FPS at all resolutions :)

Rusty's link is much easier to use though, and I'm annoyed I didn't know about it sooner!
IMO :P  :P  :P

The only annoying thing about it is that they split the GPUs into 2014 and 2015 versions which make it hard to compare across years.

Cheers guys some good info there. There isnt any major upgrade to gpu being planned for release imminently or anything that might be worth waiting for i.e price drop then on 980 ranges?

I think there is next year (smaller die baseboard thingy clever stuff) but then I always say there's always something better coming out soon so either buy it and enjoy it now and or never buy it.

Yeah but next year should be a proper jump with the die shrink and the new memory thingy.

Well made the leap and spent out for one of these. Should arrive tomorrow before midday. Quite looking forward to getting it plugged plus the extra 8gb of memory also. Nice boost to the system I think.

Anyone wanna buy a 780gtx?? Prey?? :)

Ha the JC series isn't really my thing. It's a good laugh but I just don't seem to have the hard on for it that everyone else has round here.

I'm more looking forward to playing Witcher 3 in ultra with all bells and whistles.

I must say Jez that is actually very tempting.

Any chance you can give me a proper run down on the card itself so I can have a look around on the net at it for comparisons sake? I still have four days to cancel my 380X preorder (which is £190inc vat) so if you can convince me enough you may just have a sale on your hands man. Cheers.
