Internet borked after power cut.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Hmm have you used some sort of VPN software? As that Tap adapter could be connected to it. If so might want to try and uninstall the program that uses VPN for now.

Yeah I have a vpn installed I'll uninstall it. I've had that for ages though.

You guys think theres any merit to a full clean reinstall of windows here to try tix the connection issue?

Last thing I can think of is uninstalling the software and drivers for the internet adapter from the device manager. Reboot then reinstall the drivers.

Your still on windows 7 by the looks of the screenshot so here's the drivers for it https://downloadcenter.intel.com/downlo ... Windows-7-

If that doesn't work I'm all out of ideas, so maybe a fresh install would help.

Give it a go. That a go thanks mate.

How can you tell if it's the hardware that's busted? The device manager says it's working properly in properties.

Really irritating this. Thought about a full OS reinstall but then if I don't get net back the updates for windows can't come through and maybe I'd be in a worse state than now.

Fucking power cut.

Have you tried connecting something else (laptop/notebook/old pc) to the router and see if it pics up the ip and connects fine and by Ethernet not wifi mind? As that would show a problem with the intel adapter on the pc itself or the router if it doesn't work.

Last thing that came to mind there was have you tried resting the router to the factory defaults? In case the power cut has scrambled some settings within it regarding the ethernet ports. You should be able to find a manual on how to through google with the model make you have.

And yea that would be a issue if you tried to reinstall the OS as well.

I will give all that a try later for sure. My router is a BT home hub 5 if that's any help.

Nah it shouldn't cause any issues. Once disabled the pc won't really see it any more.

Also depends if you have free PCI-E or plain PCI slots on the motherboard at hand. Either these two would work fine

I just tried my missus piece of shit laptop and it's the same with that so it's unlikely to be fixed by getting a new adapter.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalled the drivers for the adapter. No luck there either but the adapter driver had a few more diagnostic screens to play with. Took these pics of the connection and cable diag.

If it's the same for the laptop have you considered that the port on the router is fucked?

Hence this bit:

Quietman wrote:Also if you have any other ports on the router to try, or any other cables, or even any other wired devices you can plug in that may help determine the issue. It's possible that the power cut has shorted the Ethernet ports on the router but it would be incredibly localised if so!

Hmm yes I only seem to have one port from the home hub into the pc. Looking at the back of the pc where the cable goes into the motherboard there's a green light and an intermittently random flashing yellow diode. So I don't have any extra ports to test aside from the one of missus laptop which seems to cause the same error anyway. So really the only thing I can test now is the cable? Sure I have anot her ethernet cable lying around here somewhere.

Sorry Phil the physical side of things was the last on the list as I couldn't see how a power cut would fuck the cable or ports up. So irritating.

Doesn't seem to be the cable either just used the one from the working WiFi extender in the front room.

So I could try the router reset that Lee suggests however I'm kind of reticent to do that as it might affect the WiFi that at least is working perfectly fine. Fuck a duck. How unlikely possible is it that "just" the ethernet port on the router is bolloxed after this power cut? Wouldn't mind but all of my system is run through a supposed surge protected socket extension.
