A new GFX card please...

Postby Snowy » Wed Sep 05, 2012 7:33 am

So - a while back my mobo frazzled itself and I bought a nice overclocked package of mobo, CPU, RAM and cooler, but kept my old ATi 5850 graphics card as it was perfectly up to the job. Time has passed however, and I know that the old card is likely hampering the ultimate performance that my rig is capable of.

I have not kept up to date at all with gfx cards, and have absolutely no idea what's hot and what's not just now.

Looking at a budget of ~£200 (there can be some give and take here, say a £250 ceiling), what will give me the best bang for my buck?

Over to you folks :)

My card, Nvidia GTX 560-Ti, is an absolute beaut, highly recommended. You can pick it up for about £150 nowadays.

For ATi you can get: http://www.ebuyer.com/352916-powercolor ... gbd5-2dhpp

£2 over your top limit.

For Nvidia: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu ... ubcat=2379

Looking at the following:

The ATi comes out on top but not by much, so it's pretty much brand loyalty.

That's the one I've got, it's a trooper. No probs with current gen on max, should be reasonably future-proof for the next year or two.

Nvidia get all the exciting physX stuff in games like Arkham City and shit too, so it sort of depends what you value.

Just go for the best bang for buck at a certain price, whether its Ati or nvidia. Often, it's Ati.

Which has pretty much always been my reason for sticking with them - anything else is just arbitrary brand loyalty. The physx doobries are largely irrelevant and usually afterthoughts by the devs.

On the other hand, I've never had any issues running any game with an Nvidia card, whereas a fair few seem to not get on with ATI.

Yeah, I tend towards Nvidia for convenience/compatibility... Ok, laziness. That and the last ATI card I had was a pile of shit with awful drivers that never got updated properly.

I've always thought it was rather overplayed. I've never had a single driver problem in over 10 years of Ati gaming. Plus if you actually look into it, you do see people still complaining about nvidia drivers on certain games.

I just think it's pretty much a non-issue these days for most gamers.

brightroar's experience pretty much tallies with my own. I would never get ATI now as the last card of theirs I had (it came with a pre-built PC I needed that day, as my one exploded somehow overnight while turned off) was ruddy awful and wouldn't play a number of games I already owned and had no trouble with before.

It's possible since then (this would have been around 2005/6) they have improved drastically, but my own negative experience of the brand means I never even consider them now when I update my card.

Edit: or not, as I've just remembered my dad, who always goes for the best card for the price regardless of brand, has had loads of problems with his ATI purchases in recent years. I think he's switched back to Nvidia now as well. It just depends on your own personal experience, I guess.

The 660Ti is a very worthy successor to the 560Ti, it is however, (in places) £100 more expensive.

If you can stretch, the 670 is much better bang for your buck than the 660, but it also dpeends on what resolution you'll game at.
1920*1080 is still firmly in the 560Ti camp for me (448 core edition if you can find one)

The whole ATI v Nvidia argument always amuses me. Either you buy ATI and love it, or you've bought ATI multiple times in the past and always had a problem of some sorts.

Either you guys are seriously unlucky or there's something supernatural going on. Everyone I know who prefers Nvidia over ATI does so because they've had more than one card go south on them in the past. Yet I've been using them for a decade and I've never had a single problem.

For the last time Sly stop spreading your Nvidia based propoganda crap on my forum!!! :x

I have but two words for you Ian mate.

ATI. SAPPHIRE.

How about a 3GB Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 for £240? Not sure where you buy from exactly but that price is from Scan.co.uk and includes VAT.

Review...

Pros:

Great overclocking
High performance
Eyefinity gaming
New architecture
Zero Core power
Noise improvement
Cooling Performance
Power Consumption

Cons:
Pricing

Sapphire make great coolers with their cards - I got my HD4850 from them 4 years ago.
