Microsoft to make a big announcement today

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Not that I've ever encountered, but the videos I watch have decent encoding. 4GB is a rather ridiculous file size on a device that maxes out at 64GB.

So Microsoft have unveiled the (US) Surface pricing, and it's not cheap. Keep in mind this isn't even the Pro version - this is just Microsoft's iPad. I was expecting the Surface Pro to be a good $2-300 more than the RT, which would put it into the £600-700 bracket at the least.

It's £399 for the cheapest 32GB version, which is in line with the ipad. It was never going to be cheap, all the OEMs would be up in arms if Microsoft undercut them with the surface.

The cover keyboards are fair expansive though.

Yeah, the keyboards are nice and all, but $129?

And I figured they wouldn't be cheap (it's a fairly premium looking tablet afterall), but Apple has the advantage of massive popularity and thus, a bulging app store. What is Microsoft's store going to have? You're basically buying into a relatively untested environment, and it's quite a price for that. When the iPad launched, you had a relatively large selection of developers, as everyone had been coding for iOS for two years.

They really need to cut their pricing. If given the choice between paying the same amount for an Apple or Microsoft product then most people will go Apple every time.

They can't, they can't undercut OEMs or they'd be fucked over themselves. I bet Microsoft would love it sell it near cost.

I think the main advantage it has at the minute is Office support, so you can actually do work on it. The Pro version is a whole different kettle of fish, it's a proper laptop replacement.

I haven't seen any benefits of RT over Android so far, but if the proper Win8 version drops in price and has a decent reviews I'd be tempted as the hardware does seem rather snazzy.

Nearly £100 difference between 32Gb and 64Gb is a disgrace though, for that price you could buy 300Gb worth of SD cards online.

Unlike the Apple equivalents, it does actually have a slot for a microSDXC card though, so you can at least ignore the expensive versions.

Is there anywhere you can actually browse the windows app store from?

I am in NYC at the moment and went to the MS flagship store in Time Square. On a first hand experience using Win8 on a touchscreen laptop and non touchscreen laptop - it SUCKS big knobs. The metro is completely pointless as it adds an unnecessary extra step if you are on the desktop which you would be if you use a desktop computer.

The Win8 desktop is better than Win7. Just give us that without the tellytubby metro interface. Save your money.

funny you should that. I am staying in Long Island and am witnessing first hand the powercuts and sense of anger / patience by many a new yorker. Had a nightmare trip on Friday when the hotel I am staying at refused me a room when I arrived because they only got power on 30 minutes before I arrived....and this was 10pm and every room in NY fully booked. After kicking up a fuss for an hour they checked me in.
