setting up a website

Postby Jez » Wed Jun 13, 2012 9:13 pm

Shit the BED!

Ok my tech knowledge as yo uall know is a bit shit really so it kind of buggers my belief that one of my bosses has asked me to look into setting up a website for my organisation - all fine and dandy but i havent a clue where to start.

What are the basic steps involved in that?

I'm sure there are people on here who know a lot more than me, but here is a bit of advice.

You need to think about what type of website you want ie something simple and blog based or more complicated which requires some sort of coding. Once you have done that you need to look at hosting. There are loads of different options depending on what you want from the site. If you are setting it up yourself getting something that supports Wordpress might be worth it as that is fairly easy to learn the basics and while a bit blog based you can create good looking sites using it. The following link ranks the various hosting companies and has a brief review of each. Some sites include free site building tools, but in my experience they are not great and make your site look pretty generic and don't allow a lot of customisation. Ultimately if you want to get a totally unique looking and great site then you are best off getting in a web designer who can design the site you want, usually for a set fee. The downside of this is that if it goes wrong or you need to make changes you will need to pay them again unless of course they build it in Wordpress and you learn the basics yourself.

Sweet Deej :)

Thats just what i was thinking right now - a wordpress based thing. Boss has yet to tell me what is exactly required in this but im thinking whatever it is it'll only need to be fairly simple.

Cool, then any of the top web hosting sites at that link should be fine, just make sure they support Wordpress.

Absolutely no idea if this is any good, but thought I'd drop it in here on the off chance!
