Wait for a graphics card?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Wait for a graphics card?

Postby Wrathbone » Tue Jul 31, 2007 9:43 am

Does anybody know when the next batch of DirectX10 cards are planned to be released by nvidia? ATi have made such a pig's ear of the last year that I don't really trust them anymore, and I'm reluctant to buy an 8800 GTS or GTX because apparantley they don't cope with DX10 very well - even the Ultra struggles, from what I've heard. I think it'd make more sense to wait for the platform to find its feet and nvidia to produce some hardware which can make good use of it.

So anyone know if there are any rumoured dates or plans?

Nice one, cheers. That'd probably be a good time for me to do a massive upgrade.

Yar, I'm considering that also. I've been meaning to skip a generation of cards since the 9800pro and I haven't managed it yet, so skipping the 88xx maybe my chance ^_^

Anyone want a PC with a A64 4000, 2GB RAM and a 7900GT in it for £350 in November? ¬_¬

The reported specs: -

"G92" GeForce 9800 GTX specs.

- 65nm process technology at TSMC.
- Over one billion transistors.
- Second Generation Unified Shader Architecture.
- Double precsion support (FP64).
- GPGPU native.
- Over one TeraFLOPS of shader processing power.
- MADD+ADD configuration for the shader untis (2+1 FLOPS=3 FLOPS per ALU)
- Fully Scalar design.
- 512-bit memory interface.
- 1024MB GDDR4 graphics memory.
- DirectX 10.1 support.
- OpenGL 3.0 Support.
- eDRAM die for "FREE 4xAA".
- built in Audio Chip.
- built in tesselation unit (in the graphics core)
- Improved AA and AF quality levels

65nm process will allow for better yields and better power consumption. power consumption will be lower than that of a GeForce 8800 GTX. GeForce 9800 GTX will be over two times faster than a GeForce 8800 Ultra in real world games and applications.

Release date : November 2007. There will be TWO products at launch: The flagship GeForce 9800 GTX and the second fastest GeForce 9800 GTS.
- price for the GeForce 9800 GTX will be 549-649 USD.
- price for the GeForce 9800 GTS will be 399-449 USD.

I doubt the 2x faster is true, and its hard too get a bead on actual performance just from GFX card specs, but still, uses less power and give free 4x AA, bit like the 360.

I'm hoping my 8800GTS will last me until mid-2009, when it'll probably be struggling pretty badly. Then I'll just upgrade to whatever costs £200ish then. That's the sweet spot for graphics cards, IMO.

The 9800 GTX specs make me happy. Very happy. :D

I'm surpised they've gone with 9800 for the name, though, because of ATi's old 9800 series.
