CK's next graphics card? Thoughts please!

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

CK, just placing this in here so that people see it. If it helps, Bev just sold me a graphics card and special delivery P&P was £4.75.

Everyone else, suggest a graphics card please

Cat got everyone's tongue?

CK, at the moment the X1950XT has been cut to £100 and according to Custom PC, at the moment, is the best value DX9 card if you want to sit out the long wait for DX10 to be properly coded for.

X1950XT is an excellent choice with regards to price if DX10 isn't an issue. Very powerful and comparably cheap. Got one myself, works just fine and dandy in any game.

But its not too great a leap from the 1800. How do the current line of 800s compare and is it worth investing in one?

(This is all in anticipation of Crysis and the like, so DX10 would be preferable)

If you want a value option on DX10 now, then that leaves the 8600s on the nVidia side but that's that, and it's perilous to bother with less than top of the range at the moment which would be the 8800GTS with 320Mb at just under £200 RRP (the two cards above this launched at £360 and £500, or there's the same card with double the RAM at £240).

Bear in mind that these tests were done two months ago by Custom PC, who disagree with you about the X1950XT just because of its massive price cut. Hopefully the net and the fact that the next quarter's round the corner has brought these prices down a bit.

Is CK still selling that 1800, is it AGP and is it better then my GFX 5900XT?

Everything's better than the GFX 5 series.

Arf @ the above.

Jay, it's PCI-e.

I'm going to give this 8800GTS a Google, see what comes up. Depending on what I sell the 1800 for, I might push to a £250 card if it's worth it.

No, if you're an AGP diehard you have two current options:

ATI's Radeon X1950 Pro vs Nvidia's 7800GS.

Custom PC wasn't happy about the ATI drivers but Cats are usually always fixed after a while. The Power connector on the ATI's not Molex but that should mean that they pack a converter in the box. For my very last AGP card I'd prefer an ATi just so I could carry on playing AVP.

However if they use Direct X 10 as a reason to retire AGP, the company that made that public could leave themselves open to the rival choosing to support it after all.

It's not that I'm an AGP diehard. I would LOVE to upgrade my PC. It's just that I don't have the money to buy a motherboard and a graphics card

No worries Jay I was talking about myself  now i've just added a CPU and a second gig of RAM, the graphics card would be the final thing if I was going to worry about speed. However Supcom now runs at my desktop res and refresh rate and looks pretty enough IMO. At some point you have to be happy and not obsess over res and looks - when you own a CRT anyway.

In the end it might not matter. I need a new job before I worry about a brand new build, I wouldn't want to remove anything from this case purely out of hassle.
