The sound card is probably dead. Long live the sound card!!!

A few days ago my PC was overheating, so i went in to operate armed with a paintbrush and a hover to clean out the dust.

After cleaning out the dust i noticed that my wirless network card was bloking the air intake for the GFX card. So in my infinite wisdom i decided to remove my 56k modem which i would not be needing now i have my elite phat pipe, and put the wireless network card in it's slot (one slot down).

When i booted up my PC my sound was not working. I rebooted and the sound worked fine. The next morning it was not working again. I looked in sound and Audio devices section of control panel which said no audio device detected.

I then tried uninstalling then reinstalling my sound card drivers. When reinstalling it said no audigy device detected. So i tried re-seating the card. The same happened. I tried putting them back in their orginal slots. The same happened.

I Then (to check if the PCI slot was at fault) removed the 56k modem and put the sound card in it's PCI slot. When booting i was greeted with the new hardware message But when trying the reinstall the driver the card could not be detected.

A look in deivce manager show windows knows it's a sound card but there is a problem with it, when telling it to update the driver i asks for a file on the Driver CD that came with the card, this file does not exist though.

So, is the sound card buggered or has my little game of musical PCI slots simply rogered up windows/drivers?

I'm going to do a format now so we shalll soon find out. Either way i think it time for an upgrade as my student load will soon be fattening my wallet.

I'm after a new gfx card, mobo and proccessor. If the sound card is indeed buggered i'll use the onboard sound for my new mobo. If it's not then i'll use it in my new system.

So reccomend me a proccessor, mobo and gfx card for around 400 quid. I can probably push the budget a bit if it's really worth it.

So long as the PSU will pull it all...

MSI Diamond K8N (I think) 939 mobo
Socket 939 Athlon 64 CPU
NVidia 6600GT PCI-E (or higher if budget will stretch)

If you are not intent on overclocking then grab a Geil Value 1GB kit instead.

I have 2 of the same set and they are perfectly fine.

As to everything else....Nice :)

7800gt you absolute git

1GB sticks are often CAS 3 which sucks.

I prefer 512MB sticks as 80% of them are CAS 2.5 and most will take the first easy step to CAS 2 without a problem.
Not that I've tried with the Geil value as I just plain don't need to at the moment.

4x512 are not much more expenisve, and around the same price of the high end set i was orginally looking at.

Or is 1gb fine and should i be spending the extra cash on a better CPU...

1GB is fine, I only have 2 because I had the spare cash.

Don't forget to check your PSU can handle it.

Buy buy buy.

All looks fine boyo, and nothing, not even Q4 or U3, will slow that down much IMO.
