Non games;

Pushbullet is very handy to send things from your pc to your phone.

Readly is 7quid a month and is Netflix for magazines. It’s not ideal on phone though.

Downcast/Overcast/Pocketcasts for podcasts needs. I prefer Downcast but it’s the least pretty.

Waze is better than apples built in sat nav at predicting traffic but worse in other ways.

Snapseed for photo editing.

Letterboxd keeps track of films you’ve watch and want to watch.

TuneIn Radio for digital radio. Halloween radio is the best station ;)

Flipboard makes you’re various news etc.. feeds into a fake magazine for easyish perusal

Spotify... Audible... Ebay... dropbox...

Dunno, depends what you want it to do

Readly is a superb subscription. The saving on that is hundreds of pounds plus I am reading magazines I would otherwise not bother. Wish it had The Economist but given it has Time, The Spectator & Newsweek I am pretty happy with the political content. It has all the games, movie and TV mags I want plus Astronomy magazine, Nature & History mags. I am pretty chuffed I signed on to it.

Well, new computer time.

Ryzen 2700X with a fancy X370 motherboard, fast RAM and a 250GB M.2 SSD

Will be sticking that in my good old Fractal case, along with using the new PSU, GTX1080 and using the old 500GB SATA SSD as a music and game storage drive.

New case and CPU cooler shall be considered at a later date. Depends on how loud the included wraith tower cooler is.

Yeah, this seems like a pretty alright built. :-k
Certainly a step up from this i5 system I've had for the last 6 and a bit years.

Of course the system is showing up in bits. Got the memory today.

I forgot how much of a minefield RAM is.
Bought a kit that's not on the motherboard QVL or AMD certified, and seeing threads of people fretting over this particular serial number on reddit has put the fear into me. You'd think it'd just work, but who knows!?

Go one stick first, get a bios update on your motherboard if it's not bang up to date, then put any additional stick in.

My first Ryzen build would randomly bsod on me and it was when the 2nd stick was being accessed.

Wouldn't be a computer build without some upsets.

So, apparently the motherboard wasn't updated to support 2000 series Ryzen, meaning it won't boot properly with one of those chips.

Options:

RMA from Asus or AMD
Free, but could take a long time

Repair shop
Will have to wait until Monday and pay 40+ quid for the privilege of them updating the BIOS

-

None of those sounded much fun, so, sod it, I went with the hidden option: Instead of paying some smug computer repair store guy, why not get a compatible CPU and some good thermal paste on Amazon for the same price as the flat rate of the repair job and get it shipped it with a Prime?
It's times like these I'm thankful AMD chips are so cheap!

Let's see how this daring plan goes. :-k

Not a bad option assuming it's cheaper than £40. Good luck :)

Whew. It worked! BIOS and RAM all set up and nice.

Haha. Had one last quick panic with the M.2 drive. It wasn't showing up. Turns out I didn't plug it all the way in... 8-[

Other than that, just a matter of drivers and configuring Windows to my liking, and It's done!

That'd be awful.
I couldn't in good consciences. Maybe i can flog it elsewhere?

Like, anyone want a 25 quid dual core AM4 chip? It's surprisingly good!

A friend of mine actually has a Ryzen build on the way to him, on the off-chance it suffers the same issue I may be in touch :)
