New desktop, RAM question!

Postby Solitaire » Wed Oct 25, 2017 10:04 am

Hi all,

So my Sager gaming laptop finally died after over five years of faithful service

Got a question please. This HP Omen desktop came with 8GB of RAM, and has a slot available. I'm gonna paste the info in here, and if someone could tell me what I should buy to pair with existing, that'd be awesome!

Code: Select all
CPUID/CPU-Z info:
DIMM #            1
   SMBus address      0x53
   Memory type      DDR4
   Module format      UDIMM
   Manufacturer (ID)   Micron Technology
   Size         8192 MBytes
   Max bandwidth      DDR4-2400 (1200 MHz)
   Part number      8ATF1G64AZ-2G3B1
   Serial number      16881B5D
   Manufacturing date   Week 14/Year 17
   Nominal Voltage      1.20 Volts

HP website info:
8 GB
Amount: 8 GB
Speed: PC4-17000 MB/s
Type: DDR4-2133
Memory upgrade information:
Dual channel (one DIMM per channel) memory architecture
Two DDR4 UDIMM (288-pin) sockets
Supports PC4-17000 (DDR4-2133)
Supports 4 GB and 8 GB UDIMMs
Supports up to 16 GB (unbuffered) on 64-bit computers

I'm getting that I need DDR4 but it seems that the HP site says I should have 2133, but CPU-Z is telling me 2400. Any wizards out there that can find a match to what I currently have, so I can buy online?

Much appreciated! I've been spending two days getting this thing ready for school (Master's program started up again yesterday) and I'm cross-eyed and slightly murderous at this point. Thanks in advance for doing this bit of thinking for me!

If you go to the crucial website their online tool will scan your system and give you a guaranteed match or your money back.

If it's listed as 2133 but CPU-Z is telling you it's clocking 2400 then perhaps it's being automatically overclocked slightly by your BIOs. I'm not sure exactly how that works for DDR4 though, as previous RAM types could be boosted using XMP profiles on the BIOs but DDR4 does away with that.

Thanks for the answers, guys :) I ended up at Crucial's website, where I got a tip from them and just ordered this:

So, next week I'll be opening up this case and adding that in. Also, just received an HP Omen monitor from eBay, to go with the desktop. Looks pretty amazing. I'll be a happy gamer again, finally!
