For Honor actually proves your argument within it's own gameplay modes. Only the domination capture mode makes use of stat points and gear; it also happens to be the worst one because you just get steamrolled by people with max level items all the time. The duelling modes strip your stats away so everyone is on a level field and the game is far more entertaining as a result.

I'm not even that sure that RPG style levelling really belongs in RPGs anymore. It certainly can be more streamlined than the way a lot of classic titles do it.

All depends how casual/important the levelling actually is. Some games really require a lot of thought with developing character builds (since they heavily impact the gameplay mechanics), others not so much.

Different builds doesn’t have to go hand in had with level imbalance.

Doesn’t it also lock out moves till you level up a character in all modes? Either way, still a bag of shite!

The new Zelda is a clunky mess that barely amounts to half a game. An open world so open that anything they put in it fell out.
