Windows 10 Game Mode Confirmed

Postby Prey » Wed Dec 28, 2016 7:32 pm

Looks like Win 10 gaming is soon to receive a shot in the arm...

.@h0x0d looks like Windows will adjust its resource allocation logic (for CPU/Gfx etc.) to prioritize the "Game" when running in "Game Mode"

Our own sources have said this feature works similarly to how Xbox One handles running a game. Xbox OS, when a game is launched, will allocate resources to make sure the game is running the best it possibly can. Up until now, Windows hasn't had a built-in option for this that benefits games directly, but with the Creators Update that will be changing.

It's unclear if Game Mode will work with all Win32 games from the likes of Steam or Origin (we're assuming it will), or if it'll be limited to games from the Windows Store. Regardless, it's interesting to see Microsoft taking PC gaming seriously again, as for a while they kind of abandoned it in favor of Xbox. Now Microsoft's goal is the merge the two, as they both run on the same platform after all.

Not that it will put an end to shitty PC ports but if it can get games on PC running anything like we see on unified console hardware then coolio. Making maxium use of what a PC build actually has within is pretty much all we ever hoped for.

If it was windows store only I'd rather have 25fps.

They are going to call it 'Games for Windows - Live'

No...wait... [-X

I never made the move from 8.1 myself, partly due to worries about needing to fuck around with the upgrade, partially the belief that there is no such thing as a free lunch. 8.1 and Windows Shell running, and I am completely happy with my OS.

Still on 7 here. I should probably upgrade soon to get access to DX12 to make better use of this GPU, but I just cannot be arsed to deal with any compatibility issues my music software might have.

Pretty much in the same boat as Mantis, aside from the music software bit. Happy with Win7, have upgraded my graphics card but at this point can't be arsed to switch OS.

I upgraded, it's pretty good. My only issue is I'm not sure what happens if I upgrade some hardware and have to reinstall windows since I got 10 as a free upgrade from 7 which has now expired.

As far as I'm aware it uses your key up on online activation and makes it a permanent Windows 10 key.

Your activated Win 10 key is attached directly to your computers BIOS. I should know as MS gave me a version of Windows 10 Pro x64 for free after I gave up my previous Win 7 key in its place.

So it essentially converts any version of Windows 7 into an OEM version of Windows 10? That's pretty bull shit right there if it stops that Windows 7 key being installed on any other PC.

So to ask a stupid question.

If I want a whole new system or want to change the motherboard I'll have to buy again?

Cheers mate. I'm not in desperate need of upgrading the MB it's about 4 years old now and seems to be coping with everything. Next couple of years though for sure.

Windows 10 is now almost every bit as good as Windows 7 ever was and I was a massive fan.
