Pokemon GO!

Postby Mantis » Mon Jul 11, 2016 8:53 pm

Can't believe nobody has made a thread about this yet, seeing as it's currently sweeping the world like some mad epidemic. Currently only available in USA/AUS/NZ but can be accessed elsewhere if you download the APK on Android or do some jiggery with US iTunes accounts.

I've got it but not had a chance to try much yet beyond pick my starter Pokemon. There are a few gyms near my flat though and the city centre seems to be buzzing with pokestops, can't wait to get out there and catch some critters. UK launch is pegged for as soon as they get a handle on their server issues.

Some of the news surrounding the launch of this game has been crazy though. It's really bringing people together.

The pub across the road from my work is a gym. A perfect cover for my developing alcohol dependency.

Thanks, Nintendo!

It's not available in this country because the US servers keep crashing thanks to people outside of the US trying to play the game.

I've got it and will probably play it for a week or so. It's based on another game I played quite a bit called Ingress. In fact the pokestops are the same points in ingress so they've obviously reused the same map.

The game craps out way too much at the moment. I keep losing signal, server timeouts (natch) and GPS goes missing. There isn't even a quit button. I have to force close it everytime!
Still, lots of people at work use it so it's a way of chatting to other nerds.

It seems quite good fun, but I was having difficulty connecting when I tried it. It also massively drains the battery life of phones and my battery is pretty poor anyway due to the phone being over two years old.

I assume for the same reason I do - you don't get what the fuck it is all about? Bizarre Japanese(?) cutesy monsters, that for some reason people collect(?), so that, erm, stuff(?)

Completely passed me by, and younger friends on FB and the like who are frothing over this leave me completely nonplussed. Isn't it for little kids? It looks like it should be for little kids. Don't understand...

I think it's very much aimed at the 20-something market who grew up playing Pokemon games when they were nippers.

When it comes to the collecting aspect its not really different to anything else people love to collect.

They're fake. If you disable GPS and reenable it you can trick the camera into putting Pokemon in different places. Some of them are mildly funny, but they're all fake.
