Sorry Doug but that's precisely why I posted those two, for the art design and not just because I liked the games. I don't give two fucks if other people don't like the games in question as that wasn't why they got a mention at all.

You lot, honestly.

I am sure that is true, Dave. I was just commenting on Mantis' remark.

Still, I do think it's a shame that the work of traditional artists has been largely usurped by computer generated imagery today.

Aw c'mon Dave, you couldn't post the most polarising shooter in this place's history and not have me respond :D

What's so polarising about a game that half the forum likes and half are wrong about? ¬_¬

You know it's kinda hard to say what I find as a great box art without digging through my cupboard for the laast of the boxes I kept :(

I think Dan Dare on the spectrum or Amstrad was good even if it was a big ole head and not muc helse :P I could be smitten as I loved the game :)

I liked Neocron's look in-game, and really like the cover art:

Also, art for Bungie's Marathon series by the incredible digital artist, Craig Mullins:

An old one:

Can't remember ever seeing a non-budget release of this, but even with the cropped boxes, I always found the cover to be rather evocative.

Katarn did that one on the previous page, Rob. Not a criticism -- just interested to see that this one has appeared twice.

I remember seeing this one on the shop shelves as a child. I did find it quite eye-catching, but at the same time rather plain.

Hah! That's what I get for going off the cuff.

Ok, here's one to make up for it:

I generally enjoy all these early Mega Drive covers. It feels like they've paid some artist to interpret the game through the medium of air brush.

This once in particular was always a favourite. The amount of dumb stuff going on here is just a feast! Just a shame it's so heavily cropped on the cover. There's a whole bunch more shirtless action going off just to the sides.

Oh yeah, that reminds me. My favourite, favourite, favourite video game cover of all time is this:

Image

It is so metal; this was one of the most inspirational paintings from my childhood that helped solidify my love of "sword and sorcery" fiction.

Man, I would like the original painting of that hung up on my wall. Not gonna happen though, somebody bought it from the artist years ago (I checked).

I also really liked this one:

And this one, which would probably fail at not being racist by today's standards:

And this one:

Some incredibly potent memories have been stirred by looking these up. Silly I suppose to get nostalgic looking at jpegs of game covers but each of them are attached to memories that bring me to a grinding hault.

Nice Golden Axe cover!
This is the one I'm more familiar with:
Image

Phew!
Now that's a painting I'd want to have on the wall!

Speaking of which:
Image

Never played the game, but always thought this cover was bad-ass. So much so that I actually managed to get in contact with a guy who did a restoration job on it. He sent me a the high resolution source image, which I then used to have a pretty big poster made.
Would look intense in my retro gaming corner. :D Just need to figure out a way to hang it up without putting loads holes in the wall.

This one by Roger Dean has always been my favourite, from the original Shadow of the Beast. So awesomely alien.

Image

Of course when it came to getting that onto the game boxes they had to put logos and things on it which ruined it a tad.

Image

The sequel was pretty cool as well.

It always had that issue of the cover art being way cooler than the actual game with me though, as great as parallax scrolling was.
