Pretty surprised by the Dying Light: The Following review score as it's every bit the much needed shot in the arm the game needed if you'd already played far too much of the original campaign either solo or in coop. First of all the game area feels so far removed from what you had in the first outing as you are literally just met with all this open space moment into the game and crowds of zombies all stood around in lush fields like cattle looking like a scene from 28 weeks later. Secondly I cannot honestly express just how much having your own unique vehicle adds to the game althoug initially I blew it off as something of a novelty it soon becomes an invaluable asset and an extension of your character. Adding things such as a roll cage, ramming bars and UV lights so far on my own vehicle it pretty much changes how you tackle the game world surrounding you in every way.

Having a vehicle doesn't make you impervious either and involves a constant juggling act of upgrading and improving all aspects to make it a better killing machine/protection bubble. The addition of driver skill points which reward the various ways you take out enemies with your vehicle is another great aspect too and adds an extra layer of brainless fun to the game as you both do donuts in unison amidst a mass of zombies and watch those body parts fly.

Not only do you need to repair it after crashing zombie field parties but you also need to find fuel and keep the level of fuel as high as you can especially during the night time that's if you have the right amount of protection to keep zombies chasing you down and climbing on board. You've honestly not shit your pants until you look behind you as the mini map shows a night hunter chasing you down which is every bit as fast as your vehicle and in the blackness all you see are those bright red eyes coming after you at full pelt. Shudder.

Lee and I have had a fair few coop sessions on this together since it released and it's been some of the most memorable and at times downright hilarious coop gaming I've had the pleasure to partake in for quite some time. Blasting around together as a dynamic killing duo trying to outdo one another both in terms of kills and vehicle upgrades while still getting missions done is a blast. We even took to making both our buggies look exactly the same so we'd confuse the other when desperately trying to run back to our own vehicles.

Overall The Following also runs so much better than the original game did and I've become a bit obsessed with running the game in its lovely looking black and white sepia mode which only serves to make it a more enjoyable experience for me too.

I'd easily give the game an 8 out of 10, perhaps even a 9.

You have to also remake the parts on the vehicles as they too along with the weapons can only be repaired a certain amount and if you don't carry a spare set of parts forces you to ditch the vehicle and go on foot. I'm sure at the end game though it'll be trivial but that always happens then.

But yea the vehicles does add to the game but don't listen to him about the post process filters. He's mad and blind as a bat from it

Only one real issue when playing it is the flickering zombies that appear and disappear which could be a sync issue in co-op. But does mean killing them a lot more harder.

Edge's voting scores can be little inconsistent. Still think it is a magazine that lost the fact that games are supposed to be fun and highbrow second.

Not sure I agree with that sentiment. The fact that everywhere else will go with the fun angle means that there is a place for a publication that looks at things with a bit more of a highbrow approach.

Edge caters to a specific market and always has done, which is why I continue to be bemused that people who aren't in that market continue to complain about it's scores.

I've always liked how Edge approach their reviews. If it's a decidedly standard affair then a 6 or 7 is perfectly justified and by no means implies that it's a really bad game or that you shouldn't buy it.

Grossly inflated review scores that basically tell you nothing have always been one of the big turn offs from me reading game publications. Ideally I'd scrap them altogether, but toning them down a bit is a good enough improvement.
