It's like they've given the pat on the head to the usual suspects then thrown in some indy stuff (that fair enough might be good) to look all bloody cutting edge and namby pamby scarf wearing snooty studenty about it.

Irritating magazine that typifys the attitude in the gaming media when it comes to witcher series and CDProject. It does surprise me a little that fallout 4 isn't sprinkled around in there a bit though.

Edge have always been a bit different when it comes to their awards. To be honest I stopped caring what their scored games a while ago, it's still a great magazine if you take away the reviews.

But I thought you guys didn't care about the Witcher getting GOTY awards? :-k
Certainly argued that point when it didn't win big with Eurogamer, or have we reverted back to "why don't like like what I like?!" or "It's an agenda! They don't like Polish games an/or games with white men in them." ;)

Personally I've never argued it should be winning the top award, just that not including it in a top ten seems strange. When it comes to Edge, like I said, they tend to do things differently.

Huh? I care greatly about the game getting the plaudits it deserves personally. But I'm not butthurt if it doesn't win everywhere, that's childish. Its been a pretty good year all round so there is competition for sure. But like dj says its just plain odd that it barely makes a mention in the list presented here. Its a brilliant game from a brilliant company that's on the rise.

Have you played it stubby? Purely curious.

Good.
But that doesn't mean everyone has to pay it lip service if they don't actually like the game enough to rate it in their arbitrary year end list.

I have, but not enough to be considered a "fair shake".
Talked about this in the Giant Bomb GOtY thread. It's the petty issue of simply not liking Geralt and his friends. Like, at all.

Subway Diet wrote:Figured I'd jump right to the fun stuff and listen to the top ten deliberations.

Call me out for not giving it a "fair shake", but listening to Jeff describe his initial reaction to The Witcher 3 pretty much mirrors my own.

Geralt is probably one of the only video game characters in recent memory that I simply don't want to play as. Probably reflects worse on me considering I give a free pass to the likes of The Postal Dude and Not Important, but there's nothing about that guy I enjoy and the thought of having to inhabit his skin for 80+ hours turns me all the way off.

Is there a mod to replace him yet? :-k

It's the most superficial stuff. His face and voice are just, ugh. Come across as Duke Nukem for the dark fantasy crowd, or some shit. I can't say I feel much better about all the buddies he hangs about with either.

I'm sure if I got to know him perhaps I'd come around? But that's tough to do as, like Jeff said, "I don't want to fuckin' see what any of these people get up to."

I also somewhat resent not having any say in who I'm playing as. One of the big things that gets up my nose with these continental RPGs. You always have to play as the developer's idea of what a bad-ass fantasy hero looks like. And they usually look nothing like anyone I want to have anything to do with. :P
Even if it was something as simple as altering the face or gender like in Mass Effect or something. Anything. Just not that lame looking dude.

Subway Diet wrote:It's just a damn uphill struggle trying to get on with the games. I keep buying them, hoping the next one will be when I finally "get it". And yet I continue to just not like the characters enough to drag myself in far enough to find the depth.

I'm not proud of it. :?

There. I've said my bit. :(

Essentially, I buy every Witcher game, only to turn it off before the end of the tutorial section due to a combined issue of not liking the characters and finding the mechanics engaging enough to drag me any further. It can tell the best crafted story ever, but that's for naught if nothing about the set up grabs me.

Out of interest, have you played Undertale?

Well I'm not sure what to say about not liking the character of Geralt or the other characters. Horses for courses I suppose but I like the whole game and characters so much I almost find your dislike irrational. I think it's a shame that you feel that way as the story telling and questing is top notch.

How they've taken the open world idea that's gone fair stale and woven it into a great single player narrative astounds me. I suppose it's not truly open world but something in between that and the traditional linear game. The sheer choice in the decisions you can make and how those can pan out for you in minor and major ways is also something I haven't seen any one else do meaningfully. The presentation and atmosphere is perfect. It brilliantly paints the world and brings it to life. All those npcs going about their daily bollox trying to get on in a war torn shit world. But it doesn't just do that ad nauseum it brings you places where the war seems very far away and those places have their own troubles and more importantly feel and look different from everywhere else.

I'm not like to change your mind with my blustering praise (I am aware I'm over the top about it) but I'm glad I'm on this side of the discussion where I got to play the best game I've ever played. I guess it's why I can't understand why rags like Edge barely mention it.

It's almost like some publications go out of their way not to recognise it. After finishing HoS, I idly searched through reviews to see what other places thought of it. Quite a few positive reviews to be fair, but still a good number that simply went "ehhhh, it's ok we guess". Eurogamer was one such. This about a 10-hour expansion for less than a £1 per hour you'll get from it, that manages to top what was already my favourite game of all time.

I get that opinions are different and subjective... I mean, god, there are even people here who don't think FC2 was by far the best Far Cry game... but these are professional sites whose opinion is so far from my perception of this one thing, I even question what it is they expect from games or what they play them for.

Looked through a few threads by players, Reddit and the like, and saw literally nothing but unanimous praise and people as blown away as you and I were.
