Psychonauts 2 - Double Fine Crowdfunding Sequel

Postby Medicine Man » Fri Dec 04, 2015 10:10 am

No great surprise they'd go that route really. Looking for $3.3 million from the plebs with approximately another $10 million coming from other sources.

I'm torn on the whole thing tbh. A big yes to the sequel, but I have my doubts that Double Fine can actually craft a worthy game. Their track record is patchy at best.

One to watch I suppose. Plus the Gabe and Wolpaw bit made me chuckle, a little.

I think that's unfair to say their track record is patchy at best. In the recent past the only real misstep they have made was with Spacebase DF9. Other than that their output over the last few years has been pretty good. You might not like the games they have put out, but they haven't been bad games.

My main concern is that despite their being some great stuff in Pyschonauts it was a flawed game with some serious issues. It's one of those games which people seem to have forgotten about the issues. I'm not sure whether it really needs a sequel, but it will certainly be interesting to see what Double Fine come up with.

I agree DJ - Psychonauts was a decent game with flaws, but it's taken on this mantle of being this amazing game that nobody has ever played (even though everyone seems to have played it and it's not THAT amazing). It's the sort of thing that John Walker will fawn over unbearably whilst claiming it's a precious gem that only he will appreciate properly because he's special and only he will play it, obviously, because we're all MONSTERS.

(I'll probably still play it.)

I was in that same boat as many were back then where everyone was discussing and hyping up how good the game was so then when I did eventually get my hands on it I was ready for something very special. It wasn't. The horrendous control scheme alone put me off playing almost and the game itself was average. I doubt I would even look twice at a sequel if it popped up on Steam never mind back the damn thing.

In my ever so humble opinion Psychonauts can't hold a candle next to the likes of an actual genuine classic game many make it out to be and that game is Beyond Good & Evil. Kickstart a true sequel to that and I'll throw money at the screen until I pass out.

Grow Home was better than this too and look how minimal that game is.

I don't get the love for Grow Home, I just found it incredibly boring.

Don't get me wrong there are bits in Psychonauts that I love and the themes, stories and characters that the game has are all great. It just suffers in certain areas.

They'll just spend all the money on celebrity voice actors again.

I don't know MM, I'm not sure why there us so much ire in this thread. The only thing I can think is that people are annoyed that the game took so long to come out and was split into two parts.

What about their space-base game they crapped out unfinished and refused to support post-release?
