Gabe Newell did a Q&A on reddit last night about paying for mods, he managed to avoid all of the important questions.

Valve is turning into EA.

Valve continues their insidious throttling of the PC gaming scene. :-k

Sure, Bethesda has a part in this, only they wouldn't have been so emboldened if it wasn't for the Workshop. Probably part of the long game so they could start milking cash from modders day one when Fallout 4/TES6 comes out.

Haha. I changed a few of those almost two years ago for a laugh and totally forgot to change half of them back. ^_^

I don't mind modders getting something for the work they do on the larger mods but your opening some massive can of worms with these multi included packs that have this and that from other mods in them.
But also that modders did it out for the love of the game for free so I'm stuck halfway in what should be done.

It's a very risky move.

Do they have to charge or can they still offer stuff out for free?

Nope they don't have to charge for you to access their mods. But you know what people are like some will try it on stupid things like a retexture on something or a single item for the game. Just look at TF2 and CS:GO for that :P

Or get your mods from Nexus that allows modders to have a simple donation tip jar.

They will have to charge if they don't want someone else to claim their work and sell it for themselves. Even ignoring the moral and cultural issues we may have with this, it's a major rights minefield with modders being given permission to steal content, as long as it's from a free mod.

I don't see how they can square the circle of the fact that modders essentially don't own what they create.

Gabe speaks...

The basic gist is "you need a more robust Valve-is-evil hypothesis".

More I am reading about the pro and cons the more it just seems like something to quickly backtrack and get rid off.

My biggest concern is that it becomes a Steam monopoly. Will we just see the best mods on Steam because that is where you can earn money.

The people have spoken. We won.

Ultimately there were far too many very legitimate concerns for the system as it was for them to ignore.
