Crytek on Verge of Bankruptcy?

Postby Prey » Sun Jun 22, 2014 3:58 pm

German videogames magazine “Gamestar” has reported that Crytek is in big trouble and that it may go bankrupt.

According to Gamestar, the adoption of CRYENGINE is not going well and the word-of-mouth at GDC was negative. Strangely enough, CRYENGINE is currently one of the most optimized engines, so Crytek should really look into its subscription prices otherwise this amazing engine may never be used by other triple-A developers.

Not only that, but Gamestar claims that the development of Ryse was catastrophic for the studio.

Oh no. We better see Homefront 2 dammit! :?

I guess the price for their engine or options wasn't as good as Unreal's engine?

Only game that I know of using it outside of CryTek is Star Citizen.

Evolve is the other big game using it and also Everyone's Going to the Rapture.

It would be a shame if this is true. It would be another big developer going under if so.

Ah so 3 games then in total. Out of them SC is still the only one big name though ¬_¬

Oh and don't give them another idea Jez to stick another cash grab on to

Well Lee....ive seen loads of threads where they are seriously getting behind the idea that the next stretch goal is to hire some of the soon to be laid off CryTek programmers to look after CIGs concerns in terms of CryEngine.

What was the last game they released that was a commercial success? Nothing resent comes to mind anyway.

They're good at making lovely looking games, but the gameplay itself hasn't exactly set the world on fire. First Cryengine only had a handful of games use it too.

"Regardless of what some media are reporting, mostly based on a recent article published by GameStar, the information in those reports and in the GameStar article itself are rumors which Crytek deny.

"We continue to focus on the development and publishing of our upcoming titles Homefront: The Revolution, Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age, Arena of Fate, and Warface, as well as providing ongoing support for our CryEngine and its licensees.

"We have received a lot of positive feedback during and after E3 from both gaming press and gamers, and would like to thank our loyal employees, fans and business partners for their continuous support."

Crysis is the only real classic game I can think of that these guys have made. They don't seem to get a great deal of publicity from other studios making use of their engine either so I wouldn't be surprised if these rumours are true.

Almost victims of their own success. While Crysis was great, it stretched gaming rigs to the limit and I can't help but wonder if development houses looked at the engine as potentially limiting their future sales to only those who could run it?

Consoles. It's the reason the next iterations of the engines and games were just bland compared to the first one and it's expansion.
