Near the end of its development Mark Essen realised that the game had great potential to be played competitively. He took it to Evo to watch the best take a shot at it. So he went back and completely redesigned an online mode and tweaked a few things for the competitive scene, which delayed the game another 18 months or so. Nothing "indie darling" about that.
Perhaps. Still, some games seem to wear their protracted development and the exclusivity that brings as a sort of indie badge of honour. :P

That would be Yggdrasil.

So a big MS paint worm shows up at the end of a match. I guess that's reference enough for the name?

Anyone played the Blackguards early access? Out on Steam today.

Looks a bit interesting, but there was a fairly scathing first impressions preview on RPS before Christmas. Ordinarily that would put me off, but it was written by Alec Meer, who also savaged the first Witcher in his review, which I adored.

There's a demo, I suppose.

Two new games announced by Paradox.

Hearts of Iron IV

Hearts of Iron IV challenges players to face the brutal conflict of World War II in a multifaceted grand strategy game, where history can be fully relived or rewritten from the perspective of a global superpower attempting to change the world, or a small nation simply trying to survive.

And a new RPG called Runemaster.

"Runemaster is an RPG set in a fantasy realm based in the rich, majestic traditions of Norse mythology, casting each player in the role of a unique champion in a time of chaotic upheaval. Procedural maps and quests will ensure that no two playthroughs are identical, allowing players to tell a saga that is uniquely their own. Explore vast vistas through the six worlds of Norse myth, command troops in tactical combat, and define your champion through the choices they make."

If you want to grab it the best place to go is Gamefly as they have it up for £20.24 with code GFDJAN25UK.

Haven't played the demo yet, but reading a few early reviews it sounds as though that's way more than I'd be willing to pay...

Played a bit of the Blackguards demo now, it feels ok and as I suspected AM's preview on RPS was overly negative from what I've seen.

Also, having played Drakensang (another Dark Eye game), I'm fairly familiar with the levelling system so that's a plus.

But doesn't feel like a £20 game still to me, if it gets down half that at some point I'll probably pick it up.

Its a free to play mobile/tablet game. Apparently it take several hours to mine one square unless you start paying.

I was cataloguing all my games in my cupboard the other day using an app on my phone. In total I have 114 DVD case style PC games. This doesn't include all the big box games I also have.

After doing this and remembering that I have 200+ games on Steam as well, it made me realise that it is a good thing that the PC has moved to a mainly digital platform as there is no way I would have room for all of those extra games. True a few of them are duplicates and others I probably wouldn't have bought if they hadn't been on Steam, but still, Steam has saved me a load of shelf space.

In other news I found Magic and Mayhem: The Art of Magic. I only played it briefly when I first got it, and the first game was ace, so I might install it this weekend and have another bash.

PCG gave it 92%. Sounds intriguing, let us know how you get on with it :)
