It's a jury rigged harness thing to hold the two controllers steady when you play games that emulate holding an assault rifle.
It's really hard to maintain any 'gun' balance when you just hold your hands up in thin air. If you can get a physical stock to push into your shoulder it adds a level of rigidity and immersion.
Plus it'll only be a few squid to buy the bits and have a play building it :)

The new knuckle controllers look awesome, not far off full finger tracking.

More money to save up for this expensive habit.

They've only just been released to devs in the last day or so, so it may be next year when they release. Have you seen the footage of them? They strap right onto your hand so you can open up your grip and not drop them.

It's cool and all, but I'm not sure whether it'll bring any extra utility to VR gaming at the moment. I think that until we get genuine hand and finger tracking, the layer of abstraction that traditional controllers provide is necessary.

Did you look at the video Raid? It is finger and hand tracking, he was picking things up between his finger and thumb and between his palm and his other fingers. He's not pressing any buttons in that video, he's just moving his fingers, the knuckle has cap sensers so it can track your finger movement off the grip.

I could have made that more clear; I meant finger tracking independent of a controller. These knuckle controllers aren't really tracking your fingers, they're calculating where your fingers are based on capacitive inputs. The Oculus Touch controllers also do this with your thumb and index finger, but only with one point of contact rather than multiple ones. I believe the other three fingers are detected by the single grip button.

My point is that I'm not sure how much more utility the knuckle controller gives over the grip button on the Touch controllers. Having a single button activate a game's grip function is, for me at least, entirely intuitive. I also don't really like the idea of having to strap a controller to my hand, especially when it's as bulky as these are.

Actaully, I take it back about buying these. Until games require that level of dexterity I'll live with having a new headstrap and wireless :)

I suppose the main thing is you can fully open your hand to drop and throw stuff without the clunky button presses and releases with have now. Its a definite improvement over the wand controllers

Still waiting for my new strap to be packaged and sent (it's still on pre-order whilst HTC create more product after selling out the first lot)
Having been tangled up in my headphones yet again the inbuilt headphones will be a god send.

The new strap is so much easier and quicker to get on, really it should have come with the base vive.

Rift and Touch down to £399. Panic stations or just clearing stock for a hardware refresh?
