Games I'm Playing 2: Playing Harder

Space Marine

Maybe its because I'm not a massive Warhammer fan, but this game is dull. Is it just hacking through waves of orks until the end?

The Simpsons Game (PS3)

I'm not sure why.

I just liked the idea of running around Springfield, but it's dull, apart from a few fun ideas and references, it's pretty dull. A lukewarm cup of amusement if you are literally bored with good games.

XCOM

Very, very good. Got it for £10 in the sales (Greenman, I think), and it's bargainacious. Something to appeal to fans of the original, but still managing to be more than simply a remake with modern graphics. I likey.

I'm absurdly proud of my sniper who's got 40 kills in 16 missions, guy's a monster who never misses a shot, and now has a fancy grapple-suit to get up to good vantage points. His latest perk means if he kills an alien who wasn't in cover, he gets another shot. I just did a crash mission where four leapt out at me when I approached the UFO, they never stood a chance.

One of the best perks is the "remove accuracy penalty for overwatch fire" for snipers - The aliens think they're so smart and then there are brains everywhere.
IMO :P  :P  :P

Yeah, snipers end up becoming a one-man army later in the game. I rather liked the XCOM remake, but I found myself occasionally dying for it to be a bit less structured compared to the originals.

But it was nice just to see a decent turn-based game again.

I don't think I took that one, can't remember what I chose it in favour of, though. Edit: actually I checked, I did take that perk.

He's got a proper flying suit now, 75 kills in 23 missions :D

Oh, and he's a psi-specialist too, so sometimes just to mix it up he'll mind control a muton, make it run into a group of his mates and let off a grenade

I also managed to get Serious Sam 3 and Hard Reset on the cheap. Looks like I'm in for some old-school shooting. :)

Hard Reset came with a load of free levels in the extended edition, never played them because I lost my saves :(

Its very splodey and you should all buy it simply because its an indie game with actual graphics.

Ah, my favourite tactic. The great thing is, even if it fails to kill anyone, you've used that muton's only grenade. If he lives, he's got nothing to lob at you.

Word of warning: There's either a bug or oversight with the mind control power. On several occasions I had someone temporarily recruit an alien that got promply murdered by its mates (nice guys, those aliens). This would trigger panic in one of my squad, apparently viewing it as the loss of a friendly. I like to imagine most of the squad giggling while one guy screams "Muton, nooo! We hardly got to know him! Why? Why must the new guys always die?" while cowering.

Space Marine

I once started playing through this through OnLive of all things but never got very far. Now thanks to the incredibly silly $11 THQ bundle which consists of no less than six full games I've finally got it to play through on PC. I can see it getting extremely tedious already but thankfully ripping Orcs apart with new and wonderful death dealing toys is always fun to do.

Transformers Fall of Cybertron

Got addicted to the multiplayer a bit so need to head back to it soon.

Metro 2033

Is it me or is this game awesome but rock solid? I'm still attempting to adjust to the types of weaponry on offer and everything else but I'm certain I will have it finally complete before Last Light arrives. I hope.

Red Faction Armageddon

Almost at the end now. Fun game albeit yet another alternate type to both Guerilla and the first person shooter type that came before. Destruction a plenty still and some seriously cool looking weapons to take on all those underground nasty's. Was yet another part of the $11 THQ bundle and so I feel I owe Volition a full on attack right through to the end it was so bloody cheap.

Ditch the single player for Space Marine (its pretty much poo) and head on over to the MP Exterminatus mode.
I've been giving Burnout Paradise a whirl - quite a good game for a quick spin here and there. It also goes pretty well with prog house.
