OUYA raises close to $1m in hours

Postby Liam » Tue Jul 10, 2012 8:51 pm

Android based game console raises a crapload in hours:

Shooting up as I speak so it'll probably be over $1m by the time you read this.

We welcome AAA games.

We make it easy to hack.

We want less than a million funding.

This is going nowhere.

Just saw this over on Kotaku, while it sounds cool I just can't see many big devs getting behind it.
Also who cares that Minecraft is going to be on it? That's one reason NOT to not back it.

Just grab one on Ebay end of next year.

It's over two million now. Won't catch on though, how do you even say OUYA?

That's the first question in the FAQ!

How do you pronounce OUYA, anyway?
OOO-yah. Apparently it doesn't have the most pleasant meaning in Swahili.

Gotta be honest. I got a little excited reading the kickstarter page. I'm gonna follow this with a keen eye.

Maybe that's what it means in Swahili?

I think it is an interesting concept, but will it see anything other than phone games ported to it? I don't know. Still, I congratulate them on trying something different.

I'd be tempted to get one, and use it like a rapsberrypi and put xbmc and use the emulator add-on to play old console games.

some questions on the viability of the project has been asked :

http://penny-arcade.com/report/editoria ... uld-be-ske

“There are plenty of other people involved, but some of them would get fired if we tell you who they are,” the Kickstarter page stated. That doesn’t inspire confidence, and if any of these individuals works at a company that owns their extra-curricular output, which is a sadly common state of affairs, the legal mess could become quite deep.

Everything's been a bit quiet on the news front for this lately. But they've shipped out prototypes to some of their kickstarter backers and today they announced the final pricing for launch.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013- ... for-USD100

$100 for the console, $50 for the controller.

I've got a strange sinking feeling about this device. With the launch of the next gen coming soon for the big hitters, and the rise of mobile gaming on Android with the Nvidia SHIELD and Windows 8 with the Razer Edge; I'm not sure where this will fit in amongst everything. I certainly don't think it'll ever be anything other than a very niche product.

Ofcourse its going nowhere. Its running android, will be out of date within hours of being released and tablets can connect to TVs and PS3 controllers. Why would anyone want one? No dev in their right mind will put much money behind making something for it either since its so easy to pirate.
