I think it is a step in the right direction but lets face it review scores will always be hijacked by vested interests in both ways. The one thing the internet is good at being consistent is that everything is either AMAZING or SHIT

I can't see it working myself. What's to stop them from say gifting the game for a positive review from some alt account of theirs? You're not really going to stop people gaming the system unless you're standing behind them 24/7 with a club at hand

Yea Achtung Englander you're right about that. It's either 0 or 10 reviews and taking the piss reviews.

As far as I know gift games have to be bought through steam, it'd be an expensive way to get good reviews. Although Valve wouldn't stop it because they'd get their cut then.

AAA games have publishers with deep pockets to do such a thing so easily. Even the Indie games that will be much cheaper in buying price can afford to do it for the hope the PR improvement leads to some extra sales.

But yea I think Valve could have done this for some extra profits for nothing! :P

Seems like a pointless thing to introduce in all honesty.

It will seriously effect developers who use Kickstarter and already a number of developers are saying they have lost a huge chunk of their reviews. As usual it's Valve making a complete mess of a situation. Steam is starting to become a big issue for the company in certain areas and I get the feeling that they are either unwilling or unable to handle it. They could start with hiring more staff to deal with stuff like this, but it doesn't seem like the will is there.

Yea seen that Lars from LarianStudio wasn't happy that his kickbackers scores are being treated unfairly even though he understands why they are trying to fix it.

If reviews were tagged "Kickstarter backer" I'd ignore them. Weird that a company like Larian are worried about steam reviews, I'd have thought they would be above that.

I think you fail to realise how much smaller developers rely on things like Steam Reviews to boost game sales. When you are unable to carry out a big PR campaign, something Larian can't really do, and you are just releasing your game onto the whirling mess that is Steam, you are relying on people to see it on and then think about purchasing it based on the Steam Reviews.

I've certainly used Steam Reviews in the past to see if a game is worth purchasing.

Valve announced yesterday that they are adding native support for the Ps4 controller to Steam and that they plan to add other controllers as well.

Most recent steam sales have been pretty bad, they don't do daily deals or flash sales any more.

It's not that they've been bad, it's that they've not been the 99% off fire sales of days gone. They probably realised it's damaging to the overall business when everyone knows how cheap games go within even a month of release.

Some big changes are coming to Steam soon, and the people that it looks to help out the most are the consumers.

In a post on Facepunch, a user with access to Steam developer posts detailed that in an upcoming Steam update, developers will be forced to use screenshots that are representative of the final game.

The post reads:

We haven’t been super crisp on guidelines for screenshots in the past, so we’d like to take this opportunity to clarify some rules in this space. When the ‘screenshot’ section of a store page is used for images other than screenshots that depict the game, it can make it harder for customers to understand what the product is that they are looking at. Additionally, we’re going to start showing game screenshots in more places as described above, and these images need to be able to represent the game.
We ask that any images you upload to the ‘screenshot’ section of your store page should be screenshots that show your game. This means avoiding using concept art, pre-rendered cinematic stills, or images that contain awards, marketing copy, or written product descriptions. Please show customers what your game is actually like to play.
For elements such as marketing copy, awards you’d like to show off, or descriptions of your Deluxe Edition, we ask that you use the specific spaces already available on your store page to put that content rather than including it in your screenshots.

The first game to make this change is Valve’s very own DOTA 2, which previously used mostly concept art. You can view the changes for yourself here.

While this is very good for consumers in general, it’s yet to be seen whether or not these new rules will be enforced or not, or if developers find ways to bypass this.

The new update is expected to roll out in a couple of weeks.
