I think Golden Axe has replaced Fate of Atlantis for joint favourite along-side Prince of Persia. Indiana Jones is now decidedly in third place.

Funnily enough I recently started replaying TIE Fighter. It's still great. I think if I could be arsed setting up my controllers for it I'd be able to properly get into it again. It remains on my list.

I have seen some of the mods that can be applied to X-Wing, TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance, and think that set up with my X52 stick and throttle it would look and play superbly, but there seems an unholy amount of faff involved. Whenever I have tried I have ended up with crashes and just given up.

Why the hell have they not remade that series?!?

Yeah, it's a puzzle to me too. Space sims seemed to be making a resurgence a few years ago when Elite and Star Citizen were big news, but it didn't really seem to go anywhere. I think the problem is that EA currently own the rights to the Star Wars license, and they won't do anything that isn't likely to make them ridiculous amounts of money or would take the barest minimum of effort. Granted, I think they'd be much easier to put together than they used to be given the prevalence of off-the-shelf game engines, and it's not like half of the work isn't already done with a Star Wars game (the soundtrack, general setting, ship designs, sound design etc. already exist), but they just don't seem interested. I think they'd rather keep it a part of Battlefront. Let's face it, if EA did want to do a starfighter game, it'd be something that could easily be done with a joypad so it could be put on consoles without needing a specialist controller. A modern X-Wing game with sim-style functionality (the power distribution systems, shield balancing, that sort of stuff) and VR support would be my perfect game. I don't think there's any game that I want more.

And yeah, controller setup is a bit of a nightmare for the X-Wing games. My biggest problem is that the games only support input from a single controller, which is awkward if you're using proper sim controllers which are all their own USB device.

God, I've not played TIE Fighter in years. I think it's time to go back to it and realise how terrible my reactions are now compared to when I was a teenager.

EDIT - Thinking back on it, one of my favourite things about the game was how it sometimes gave you conflicting orders that put you in a really awkward or impossible situation. As an adult who has multiple managers all pulling in different directions, it strikes a unique chord that I don't think any other game has ever achieved.

I have very fond memories of TIE Fighter. I loved the tattoo that your pilot would get, which gradually got larger as you progressed up the ranks.
