FPS, not much but its nice. RTS dang well does. Tech trees, research trees, unit stats and abilities etc etc.. can all be invaluble when youre learning how that game plays. Most RPGs would require less than most RTS actually since theres generally a lot less going on in them.

I don't consider tech trees etc as depth, I consider it necessary information. I assumed you were talking about extranous details and little story tidbits etc etc.

No I just mean *anything* in the manual. I'm pretty sure CoD4 for example, dosnt detail any of the MP modes at all. Obviously its something that dosnt take long to work out once your in a match but youre still going in blind. UaW had small details about the units but to tech/research trees and nothing detailing the units secondary powers. Hellgate tells next to nothing about the character classes and their abilities/skills.

When you open something as simple as WoW (and it is very simple to start with) and a big fuckoff encyclopedia falls out theres no excuse for other games not to.

I think the change to DVD boxes was more to do with shelf space in stores rather than any enviromental issues. After all recycled cardboard boxes are more environmentally friendly than plastic DVD cases.

Well.. apart from all the trees you have to kill considering the level of recycling here and in the US.

I much prefer DVD cases, but that's only because it makes my games collection less conspicuous to me dad, as he thinks video games are the sole reason for the collapse of civilization

Not if they were all made from recycled paper. Either way it is still more enviornmentally friendly to make something from paper instead of plastic.

Here's one: Seeing your own body in game. A few games still carry this convention forward but most FPS's just have you as a floating pair of sentient forearms. Also, projecting your own shadow.

i like this one.

but did anyone else find that games that did have full view body you tended to get easily stuck in the environment? im thinking thief deadly shadows off the top of my head.

Bollocks, then you end up with stuff like B&W where you spend 2 entire levels learning the ropes until at last you break free of those retarded advisors and do something... only you cant as they then take away what you've been using for the last 6 hours... poor critter :(

If its going to be done add it in entirely seperately, I want to shoot stuff and learn from my mistakes, not be treated like an idiot

Give me a decent manual anyday, see Homeworld and X-Com: TFTD for some of the finest examples. Perfect to give you sense of the game world while installing the game or coming home from the shops

except that these days all paper comes from trees planted especially for the purpose and when they cut 'em down they plant more.
