and considering that Tagan PSU was around 80 quid, that was really not good enough for how much they charge, but I suppose BF2 was the Crysis of its day, spec-wise.

Yeah, it always demanded lots from your computer, yet never looked as good as some of its better running contemporaries.

Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast killed my old PC. Wasn't even my disk.

I don't playing anything released after 2005 as I think my PC will actually melt and spill out over my feet giving me permanent plastic shoes.

Simbin's GTR killed my old 6800GT for some reason. Or maybe it was just on its way out.

Call of Duty 4 made my PC overheat to the extent that it restarted itself nearly every mission. I have now given it a thorough clean for the first time in years and I'm honestly surprised how the PC turned on at all. It was literally clogged in dust. Quite disgusting. Mainly acquired from this year living in uni halls. That bedroom can't be good for my lungs. :(

Garry's Mod screwed up (or pointed out the screwing up of) my motherboard; overheating and overtaxed, it went BANZAI CORRUPTION ACTION. A taste (click for a better view of the abyss):

Mmm. A swirling vortex of artefacting pixels, ruined dreams and despair.

Nothing has outright killed any of my hardware that I can think of. But I tried to play CoH on an old 9600 Radeon card and it never really worked quite the same after it staggered around trying to get the game working then a few weeks later the card outright died. I think it was more old age that finished it off though. >_<

That reminds me, wasn't there a game made up entirely of static?

Mentioning Garry's Mod reminded me; HL2's sound bug was something almost everyone had, but at the "car trap" section of Ravenholm, a 9600 and 9800 Pro would crash out every single time until the Cats were updated. Who knows what it was about the Source engine that did that to ATi cards.

Also in ZPS if the driver's not happy or a map's got dodgy textures, I get the "magenta chessboard" effect on walls or floors, but no crashes...

I used to get that in CS Source if I minimised it and maximised it again - well, sometimes. Also, I didn't know anyone that suffered from the HL2 sound bug, I've only ever read about it on the net.

I remember after playing F22: Lightning once, it made my PC act as if the LMB was always depressed. Always.

WoW once crashed and totally b0rked my XP installation somehow. Reformat, somehow more painful than a hardware failure.

Huh? I still play GTL and GTR2 on my 6800GT on near enough full settings 1280x1024 with AAx2 and all the posh shiny effects.

My 9600XT did overheat quite a bit trying to do that and Half Life 2, but a good dusting normally sorted it. Tbh alot of these "killed" probably should be caused dusting.

But never had a failure due to a game nor any of the many starforce games I installed.

Yeah I think the heatsink wasn't applied correctly on my 6800GT. It ran near max as you say, but a couple of weeks later loads of white specs started appearing and then loads of green horizontal lines. The PC then restarted and refused to display anything above 800x600.

It was a budget brand though... Inno3D? Something like that.
