Germany Slowly Abandoning PC Gaming?

Postby [Prey] » Sun Mar 09, 2008 1:59 pm

With the German CeBIT (information and telecommunications technology) exhibition wrapping up this weekend, an interesting report has surfaced, Germans are switching from PC to game consoles. Traditionally one of the strongest PC gaming markets in all of Europe for decades, German games software sales were up 21% last year, in particular 65% for mobile devices, 38 % for PS3/X360 and Wii, while PC sales have dropped by 3%.

I still want to confirm this report with a more reliable source, but have yet to find one.

So german gamers are leaving the platform, and gaming devs are leaving germany to escape it's hold on producing violent games. Snazzy.

They could only play so many poorly made management games, it seems.

Nah, the Germans will never ditch the PC. They love hardcore strategy games too much.

This is just another 'the PC is dying' report. Given that sales of console games are up 38% it probably just shows that people are enjoying the newness of the consoles - that that has only led to a drop of 3% for PC games shows just how popular those games are.

Consoles aren't even cheaper there are they? If anything they're very slightly more expensive. This ain't good.

Well, since a lot of PC games involve killing Germans, and a lot of console games involve coloured blobs, who can blame them?

The high price of console games (almost double the price of the same game on PC) usually means i'll go for the PC version unless it's a game i'll be wanting to play online with my console owning buddies.

Should the topic not be more along the lines of "Germany abandoning gaming"?

After all, Germany has probably the most silly amount of "violent video game" banning and strict rating systems.

A 3% drop is hardly that big and certainly not a sudden indication of Germany abandoning the platform. It sounds like this site just wants to grab a bit of attention by jumping on the 'PC gaming is dying' bandwagon. Oh and do we know whether their figures include digital distribution as retail is increasing losing sales to the internet in the area of PC gaming. This 3% could have just got their games from Steam or somewhere similar instead.

The thing with PC sales numbers is that they really need to start incorporating online sales somehow. It is rather galling that Valve don't release Steam figures. Anyone would think that they would want to champion the success of their system.

Is it just me who thinks gaming news like this (in fact, a lot of gaming news) just simply boring? I can't believe how seriously it's taken these days, with statistics and figures being spewed out and people crying about this that or the other ending. The same can be said for "Possible sequel to FPS game that's not out yet in the works" news. Who cares? It's a hell of a long way off, and rumours mean nothing anyway.

Just a thought. ¬_¬

Out of everything that might be in a German games industry article, devs relocating so they can have as much violence in their games as they like is the only point that could ring true.

The rest sounds like the same old waffle.

So I'm guessing the possibility of pc gamers picking up a Wii to impress the chicks is out of the question??
