Best TV you liked

Postby Achtung Englander » Thu Jan 18, 2018 9:08 am

This article got me thinking

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radi ... t-tv-shows

For me it is difficult to say this is the "best" season for a show as most shows have highlights and low points in most seasons but I would love to get your feedback. For me I would list the following as the most enjoyable from multiple season shows. Some of these shows go way back

The Walking Dead - season 1
Red Dwarf season - 3 - 5
Breaking Bad - all of it
Gomorrah - season 1. One of the best TV shows I have come accross
Auf Wiedersehen Pet - season 1
A Very Peculiar Practice - season 2
Fargo - season 1
Flight Of The Conchords - all of it
Game Of Thrones - hmmmmm - errrr - all except season 7. Felt too rushed
Halt And Catch Fire - season 1 (not seen 4 yet)
Plebs - all of it
Pulling - all of it
Utopia - season 1
Yes Prime Minister - season 1 (I love this show)

There is so much TV I am missing. Need to get around to see The Wire, House Of Cards (US - don't care about this Kevin Spacey thing), Orange Is The New Black. Might revisit Girls (dunno)

Anyone recommend anything good. I know about Stranger Things - not got around to seeing season 2.
Games playing : Doom / Attila Total War / 80 Days (its like reading a book !)

Put The Wire on to watch straight away. Brilliant TV that, unique show that you'll think about for a long time.

House of Cards also excellent it has it's low moments but the highs make up for it. Spacey is brilliant in it.

Black Mirror - Most seasons, personally the latest (4) is a bit spotty and some episodes are overly long.

I'll probably return to this periodically as stuff occurs to me, but off the top of my head:

Arrested Development series 1-3 (don't bother with 4)

Better Call Saul - as you had all of Breaking Bad on your list, AE, this is a must-watch

The Good Place - anyone with Netflix should be watching this, smart, funny comedy with some genuinely surprising twists and turns.
My face is tired.

Rome - season 1

I did just sign up to Netflix last week - so I will definitely watch The Good Place. Thanks

On a side note - I am tad disappointed with Netflix. The choice of movies is not very good (my own Plex media server has better choice). Its good for TV shows and original content seems to be its USP. I would not get this for movies alone

A few for now:

Blackadder the Third - the best collection of episodes overall I think.
Battlestar Galactica - the miniseries - superior to the full series IMO.
The Wire - it's between season 3 & 4. Hard to say.
Game of Thrones - 2 or 3. Season 4 onwards it lost its way.
Firefly - season 1. :(

Loved Mad Men, all seasons. It's my favorite TV show for a dozen different reasons.
Firefly, of course.
Halt & Catch Fire - Good show. I need to catch up on the seasons though.
Travelers - Netflix sci-fi show. Surprisingly good. Really hope there will be a season 3.

If you like British political satire like Yes Minister then you'll really love The Thick Of It.

And continuing the political theme, The West Wing remains one of the best TV series I've ever watched. I'm not sure I could really pick a "best" season, though my favourite episode was the finale of season 2. It's pretty consistent in terms of quality, though I personally think the final two seasons aren't as good (the writing is just as good, it's just that the focus shifts away from the White House and a lot of the main characters to focus on an election campaign).

Definitely meant to say that one in my earlier post (even to the point of googling the title as for some reason I always get In The Loop in my head when I think of it), not quite sure why I didn't!

I'll also throw out the Sopranos, if you've not seen it.

May as well throw some lists together, more or less ordered but split into groups because, honestly, how do you compare the greatness of Band of Brothers and Blackadder?

Dramas
- Band of Brothers
- The West Wing (as Raid says, the final two seasons are the weakest, but I'd still place them higher than most seasons of other shows)
- Game of Thones (all of it, with a gradient that slides slowly from season 4)
- Breaking Bad
- Lost (I argue it holds up even knowing it was all made up as they went along, but watching it as it aired over 6 years I was 100% enthralled)
- Sherlock (excluding a couple of episodes)
- The Newsroom
- Star Trek: TNG (my go-to TV if I need a familiar pick-me-up.... in spaaaaaaaace! The theme music is still so good.)
- Rome
- 24... kind of (Seasons 1-6. Utter trash, and I loved all of it. I imagine watching it in a post-Trump world will be troubling at best.)

Comedies
- Blackadder (all of it, but less so for series 1 as it was still finding its feet)
- Fawlty Towers
- Peep Show
- The Simpsons (seasons 2-10, because season 1 is plain weird at times and season 11 onward went from dubious to outright bad)
- The IT Crowd
- Rick and Morty (great comedy, great sci-fi stories... what's not to like?)
- Community (seasons 1-4. After that it lost the plot a little)
- The Office (US version, seasons 2-9. As much as I like the UK one, they're totally different, and after season 1 the US one is what sticks with me)
- The Inbetweeners

So many other shows I'm forgetting.

Dexter - Season 4 (John Lithgow was epic. Slowly went down hill after this)
Gotham (Series 3 got on my tits. Hopefully S4 will be better)
13 Reasons Why
Aquarius - Charles Manson and co. Only did two seasons, with only the first on Netflix)
Narcos
Sense 8
Treme - Series 1
The Keepers - Docuseries about the murder of Sister Catherine Cesnik
Crossing Lines - Series 1&2
Blue Bloods
19-2
Bosch

As has been mentioned by others:-

Breaking Bad
The Wire
The Newsroom
Travelers
Halt & Catch Fire
Blackadder 4
Faulty Towers
Red Dwarf
Justified
True Detective (Series 1)

The warrior whispers back "I am the storm"
