Star Trek: Discovery

Postby Raid » Wed May 17, 2017 10:20 pm

The first Star Trek show in 12 years finally had its first real footage unveiled this evening.

https://streamable.com/pmp54

It's set between Enterprise and The Original Series in the prime timeline... and honestly we don't know much more than that. It seems that the Klingons will feature heavily, but that's a radically different aesthetic from what we're used to. Design-wise it clearly takes something from the recent films - let's just hope the engine room isn't a bloody brewery.

It starts this autumn, and it's being shown on Netflix in the UK and just about everywhere else while the poor Yanks need to pay for CBS' own streaming service. This means it'll probably be cancelled following the planned 15 episode first season because no Americans will be watching it.

It says before the Enterprise, as in the ship Kirk was in command of.

Enterprise the series (with Scott Bakula) was the story of mankind's first warp-capable ship, so it can't be a prequel to that.

First Warp 5-capable ship (ie: fast enough for real exploration), but yes.

I really liked Enterprise, I thought the exploration of humanity finding its place in the cosmos was compelling. It was cancelled just as it was finding its stride, and I'm hoping Discovery picks up the mantle rather than just being a TV version of the recent films.

I would much rather it was in the TNG era or shortly after. I'll give it a shot for sure but I hope it doesn't bring but some of the rubbish races from Enterprise.

I doubt anyone will ever touch the Xindi again other than mentioning them in passing, if that's what you're referring to.

I'm happy with it being another prequel series, personally. If it's only ten years before TOS, then it's basically the same period as Kirk's first 5-year mission, and it ought to be able to explore stuff that TOS realistically couldn't because it was the sixties and they had no production budget. I just hope it's more thoughtful than the JJ-verse stuff.

OIC. Can't say I've been following the Star Trek Canon, so thanks for clearing it up.

Also it looks pish.

Haven't watched it since the mid-season hiatus. Have started the next one a few times, then switched it off with a 'meh'...

I will get round to it eventually though.

Think I gave up after episode 5 or 6, not a single likeable character. Might give it another go eventually.

I was starting to think it was ok but the post hiatus stuff has been rubbish. It’s the opposite of Enterprise where the only time it was ever goodish was in the parallel dimension.

Struggling to get into this. It certainly has its moments, but the new Klingons annoy the hell out of me. Its early days, but its a struggle.
