It's October! You know what that means!

Postby Subway Diet » Sat Oct 01, 2016 8:42 am

Time to make horror movie recommendations!

Mostly looking for ideas of stuff to watch for myself, but also trying to figure out what to show when inviting family over. Feels like I set the bar a bit too high for campy, well made fun with the likes of Cabin in the Woods and Evil Dead 2. Nothing is coming to mind for similarly toned films, and most every other horror film I own is probably a bit strong.

So, what're you lot planning to watch?

If you're looking for something played more for laughs than horror, then Tucker And Dale versus Evil is great, starring Wash from Firefly. It's a bit like Shaun of the Dead for rednecks.

I also quite enjoyed Cockneys vs Zombies, if only for the sight of an elderly Richard Briers trying to outrun the undead on a zimmer

On Halloween I might try to watch Evol's recommendation, Rec 3.

House of the Devil, Afflicted, Dead Girl and Housebound would be my lesser watched recommendations. Out of those, Housebound would be top I think. Peter Jackson could have made it after Braindead and it would have fit in well. House Of The Devil is pretty awesome. Afflicted is one of a tiny number of found footage films that have impressed me (like... this and rec maybe?). Dead Girl.... might not be one for the family ¬_¬

I would also recommend Martyrs just so I know I'm not the only one thats endured it.

We're going to give 31 a watch but with low expectations since its been a while since Robs made something good.

Afflicted... is that the one with the two friends who go travelling round the world?

Saw that (possibly on your rec) a while ago... liked it a lot.

Saw Martyrs last year.

Was about halfway into the film and thought it was pretty intense... then it kept going.

It's great fun, all the better because I went in with low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised!

I'll save up Rec Apocalypse for Halloween and maybe Lights Out from earlier in summer will go to rental as well. Judging by last year anything older than that will hit TV again, might pull Carpenter's Halloween off the shelf and give it a spin.

Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is my first recommendation. Watched it twice now in the last week and I fucking love it. Deserves cult status if you ask me.

Secondly I will mention Last Shift which revolves around a female rookie cop's 1st shift in the last night of a closing police station which I found a very surprisingly good watch.

Others I feel worthy of note are - Girl House, Let us Prey, No one Lives, Some Kind of Hate, Exists, Charlie's Farm.

We recently watched As Above So Below, which I thought was quite good.

It's all shot on first person shakey-cam though which annoys some people.

I watched it a few weeks ago. If I had known it was going to be in first person I would have skipped it but it wasn't all that bad in the end.

Let the Right One In, really good Swedish vampire film. I'm guessing it was low budget as some of the effects are a bit ropey but it doesn't detract from the story. What the ending implies is creepy as well.

Ordered some horror films.

30 Days of Night and Splinter. Both of which I've had enthusiastically recommended to me, despite tepid critical receptions. We shall see if I've been talked into a couple of stinkers. :P

Alright, let's try this again.

Addams Family
I've not seen it since the mid 90s, but have been hearing a lot of positive buzz. Ok, not a lot, but more the Giant Bomb NY office has been talking about it a whole bunch.
Tucker & Dale vs Evil
Unless I remembered it completely wrong, might be the right blend of horror comedy to watch on Halloween with the family.

Already feel better about these two. :P
