Cameron's dream project. He's been banging away at it for more than a decade.
Then hands it over to Robert Rodriguez? I'm torn on that decision.

Much like I'm torn on them casting an actor that looked perfect for the role, then replacing her with cheapo looking CGI with absurd eyes. Yes. We know. It's based on an Anime. Thanks for hammering that point home in the most distracting way possible.

Still, every summer need to have one bonkers blockbuster that you can't help but wonder how it got even made, but you're glad it did (Looking at you, Valerian and the city of a Thousand Planets), and this is currently looking like it'll take that place. Or it'll take the Ghost in the Shell role and be a poorly handled, forgettable adaptation that doesn't know what it wants to be.

Ready Player One looks a little bit iffy to be honest. The first trailer was interesting, that new one makes it look like predicable pish to be honest.

Never read the book but I'm guessing society is kept in control by the game, the secret whazit hidden within is the off switch for the game and it's basically Tron 2.

I'll still be going to see it though.

Yeah, I think he always was going to direct it but his Avatar obsession (4 sequels he's directing #-o) ended up consuming him completely - so it was either hand it over to someone or it never gets made.

Basically its a dystopian future pretty much controlled by one corporation, and the oasis is a free virtual world that pretty much the whole world lives its life in - which the aforesaid corporation would do anything to own and monetize. Surprised theres no paid lootboxes it in actually.....
It's not unlike the Willie Wonka tale, which I think they gave a nod to by featuring the opening notes of "Pure Imagination" in the first trailer.

I have been pissing myself with laughter about the poster for the film. I mean they have to be pulling our leg right?

Passages from the book have been circling in light of the new trailer.
Out of context, perhaps, but it was dire!

At first, I didn't think much about the crossover/nostalgia bend of the film. It seemed funny more than anything. But seeing stuff from the book where it's just a sting of first person sentences asserting how awesome the character is because they know pop culture from the 80s...
Is it really just a puff piece about how nerds are actually the coolest people because they're "nice guys" and can quote Back the the Future and Ghostbusters?

I enjoyed the book myself, read it a few years back. That said, it did resonate a lot as it was pretty much aimed squarely at loads of stuff from my formative years. The D&D module Tomb of Horrors I used to own, so that whole section was brilliant for me.

I read the book recently and felt a bit like Subway about it. Lots of wanking over 80s nerd culture. Even when you set that stuff aside, the story/writing itself was pretty poor, and ending is such an anticlimax.
