I'm avoiding watching it as apparently it's playing before the new Star Wars, and I may as well see it at the cinema, but the Star Trek subreddit is annoyed about one thing or another. Because, y'know, that's unusual.

I know the federation doesn't use money, but they must see the waste involved in building a giant spaceship that immediately blows up?

[Simon Pegg] said he had been asked to make the new Star Trek film “more inclusive”.

“They had a script for Star Trek that wasn’t really working for them. I think the studio was worried that it might have been a little bit too Star Trek-y,” he said of the original draft.

“Avengers Assemble, which is a pretty nerdy, comic-book, supposedly niche thing, made $1.5bn dollars. Star Trek: Into Darkness made half a billion, which is still brilliant.

“But it means that, according to the studio, there’s still $1bn worth of box office that don’t go and see Star Trek. And they want to know why.”

He added: “People don’t see it being a fun, brightly coloured, Saturday night entertainment like the Avengers,” adding that the solution was to “make a western or a thriller or a heist movie, then populate that with Star Trek characters so it’s more inclusive to an audience that might be a little bit reticent”.

Ironic, considering the topic of the rest of that article.

Looks in line with the first two films, ie. gash. If the new series follows in this pishy alternate universe Trek's truly dead.

I loved the first two movies myself and proudly own them both on blu ray. Although I'm not a huge fan of Justin Lin he does seem tp have captured the essence and combination that worked so well for JJ and the characterization doesn't look to have changed any which is always a bonus. Whereas Star Wars tends to play its game with a constant poker face new Star Trek manages to do both that and play it tongue in cheek too so as long as they still deliver everything I grew to love from the first I will enjoy this one just as much regardless of it being in completely different hands.

I'm just hoping Pegg's involvement in the movie doesn't mean he gets an overly extended amount of screen time as I tend to find his character rather annoying.

So some rather awful news; Anton Yelchin (Chekov) was killed today in an accident with his car: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-36572649

Seemingly the cast of the new Trek films was really quite close, and this isn't going to be an easy press tour for them given the film is only a month away.

Off to see this tomorrow with the older son. Quite looking forward to it as I'd caught a radio review about it earlier which places it as the best one of the new reboot. Not sure what Idris Elbas role is about but he tends to make things better in anything he appears in.

See my review but it's another one to scare up some freebie tickets for and watch a second time, that's the benefit of all that action whatever my other misgivings were with the film.
