My thoughts exactly. To me, Gladiator was his historical masterpiece, and the two epic-scale historical dramas he's done since were both awful. A lot of people blame Kingdom of Heaven's issues on Orlando Bloom, which is easy to do, but its biggest failing was that it was an unstructured mess of a story. Robin Hood was plain shit in every way. Why he's having a fourth attempt I've no idea.

It seems ridiculous, but in my mind the best film he's been involved with in the last ten years was The A-Team. That's a shameful decade of film-making.

The only good thing he's done since Black Rain is trying to kill Samus.

Talking about boycotting films, media or art in general always smacks of hysteria to me. Brings to mind wacky Christian groups with signs outside of cinemas.

I'll reserve such a term for, say, multinational corporations exploiting the third world. When it comes to creative works, expressing ones opinion and allowing others to make educated choices is better than knee-jerk demands for removal.

Going all "Stop brainwashing these young white children. You have the growing up thinking they were kings and Queens in Africa #BoycottExodusMovie" just sounds mental to me.

Also, aside from being stubborn, outspoken and bullheaded, Scott is also from a different era. Doesn't excuse daft comments, but it explains them. Up to you if that's enough of a problem that you'd abstain from his works.

For insinuating that whitewashing is not a noble cause, then noting that the source website was down? :|

I laughed at the comment that they have ethnic diversity with Ben Kingsley playing a role. Erm, he is a brit...? Rather like Christian Bale...

Personally I won't watch it, but not because of the reasons posted in the thread here. No for me, Egyptian history is absolutely fascinating, so to make some fuck-awful bible story is wasting the source material.

I'm hoping that it's actually a "bad" film. It'd be a bit shit if it got tore down just for questionable casting.

from the reviews so far the film is just style over substance. Apparently it does nothing new and the script is shockingly woeful

No change from the first time I posted, his previous movie The Counsellor's received an excellent Blu-Ray package with two cuts in the box without a double dip, so I'll buy that and stay one behind whilst checking the sale price on Prometheus.

Ah, thanks. I was meaning to watch that, but lost the link and forgot the name of the fella.

As for boycotting Ridley Scott? This is probably coming from a shitty privileged position, but my plan was always just to treat the movie with the contempt it deserved and leave it at that. :?

I only vaguely knew about John Oliver and decided to give his show a go as it aired on Sky Atlantic. It is excellent. He does stride the middle ground with a leaning towards liberalism but there is no denying that his team find some really really stupid American laws and customs

I am convert and will watch his stuff regularly. Shame we have no UK equivalent. HIGNFY is too gameshowy

Yeah, John Oliver is fantastic. The Last Week Tonight Youtube channel has hours of his critiques for those without access to Sky Atlantic: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3XTzV ... 0rQbuvCtTQ

Last Week Tonight is one of the best things on TV. It's informative and insightful enough to have merit, silly enough to stop horrible subjects being preachy or depressing, and blunt enough to be properly funny. I wasn't sure about John Oliver's acting in Community, but he is perfect for this.

I still get weirded out when he says American things like "mom" in his British accent, though.
