Pirates of the Caribbean - dead something or other

What a bucket of bilge-water. It was all style over substance. No characters worth caring about. No clever flowing scenes. Jarring changes.
Obvious bits thrown in for the 3D version.

I'm done with this franchise now (and I did like it a lot in a daft way)

I enjoyed it. Better than the last but that's not saying much.

Spoiler: show
Does destroying the trident mean that Barbossa can't be brought back like before?

I don't know if the Trident is like a one time deal, or whether it is like.. no more magical curses forever?

Also the Special Effects for Salazar and his crew were really good.
IMO :P  :P  :P

Yesterday was John Wick: Chapter 2, which was damn good. Holy crap! Keanu killed so many dudes!

Today was Moonlight, which was... phew. Yeah.

Great films, but the tonal change was whiplash inducing.

John Wick has gotten me in the mood to watch some recent action movie classics.

So, putting my 3D TV to good use again with Dredd.
=D>
Continues to be a damn fine film.

I'll never get over those CGI people in that fight scene. Good lord. It really does look like a video game. A bad one, at that.

Keep thinking I want to re watch the Blade films, but I then remember they're a tiny bit rubbish. 8-[

Continuing with the modern action classics:

Mad Max: Fury Road (In black and white)
Still damn good, though the "Black and Chrome" version doesn't really reinvent the film, but it certainly presents it in a whole new style. If anything, it the wild OTT wasteland feels like the pages of 70s/80s 2000AD come to life.
I wouldn't say this new edition is required viewing, but it's worth looking for anyone wanting some more Mad Max. :)

The Raid
Fuuuuck.
Hadn't seen it in a while and was swiftly reminded that the film is still awesome. Awesome, and crazy as hell!
It's a damn shame the Welsh guy hadn't done much at all since The Raid 2. We really do need more of this.

The Raid 2

The problem with The Raid 2 is that it succeeded at being more than the first film.
What I liked about the first film is that there's enough plot to get them in and enough plot to get them out. It's a singular, focused experience that's damn near perfect.

The sequel feels like they bolted some hair-raising martial arts on to an alright crime epic. I imagine this would be a treat if you liked those kinds of films, but hard edged Yakuza stories and the like never really got their hooks into me.

It's good, and it has it's great moments, but it's not really for me.

Alright!
Mad Max: Fury Road, The Raid, Dredd, John Wick. It's been a good week. Now, what other modern action classics have I missed? :-k

Watched Edge of Tomorrow recently and thought it was good. Tom Cruise was actually good in it.

Aye, that's a cracker of a film alright.

I mentioned it a few weeks ago I think but Fire Fight is a good little action film. Similar to The Raid as in its set in one location and in real time.

Transformers Revenge of The Fallen - I was in the mood for something dumb and explosion-y last night, and this was on TV. I've been fairly outspoken for my disdain for the Transformers franchise before (giant piloted war machines > giant sentient robots that transform into boring trucks), but I was not really prepared for this being utter garbage.

There was so much wrong with it that I'm not sure where to even start. Mythical legends? Being brought back to life by prophetic visions? "The power was inside you all along" cliche? Elderly giant robot shits itself? Elderly giant robot somehow is able to teleport when the modern ones can't? Conspiracy nutcase's radio call is somehow put through to the captain of an aircraft carrier at just the right time? Giant Voltron-esque war machine has testicles? The massive anti-climactic ending?

And a question; does Michael Bay actually masturbate to military hardware? I know a lot of Americans have an unhealthy-sounding attachment to their military, but the latter third of this film could probably be accurately described as aircraft-porn.

Why the fuck do people continue to pay to see these films?
